ODYSSEY Newsmagazine Recaps: Volume 5 Stories by ODYSSEY Staff, package by Anna Shaikun

The ODYSSEY presents: Dancing Diamonds Sparkle, Volume 5 Issue 1: In this issue, the ODYSSEY highlighted the Dancing Diamonds and their contribution as a beloved Clarke Central High School football game halftime show. Sports piggybacked off of the football spotlight and told the story of a rookie with potential on top of the section's staple season preview for the fall season. News and Viewpoints shared sister stories on price increases on school lunch as well as the special needs program START. Viewpoints also voiced student responses to the new cell phone policy while Variety covered the hottest new book-turned-movie, Harry Potter. Story by Cadence Schapker
The ODYSSEY presents: Constructing Something Solid, Volume 5 Issue 2: 2007’s October issue featured a cover story on a Clarke Central High School construction class that allowed students to gain hands-on experience with building. It additionally covered the Teenage and Adult Driver Responsibility Act and then sophomore Ethan Davis’ goals to follow in the footsteps of several family members in military careers. Another large feature story in this issue covered the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and CCHS’ difficulty in reaching the Adequate Yearly Progress standard set by the act, with a Viewpoints story on the same issue. Altogether, Volume 5, Issue 2 allowed audiences to read a variety of stories on different topics, leaving readers thinking about several issues that were affecting the school. The ODYSSEY presents: Hammonds Sticks It To The Mat, Volume 5 Issue 3: In the third issue of the 2007-2008 school year, the ODYSSEY Newsmagazine featured a cover story focusing on then junior and gymnast Talia Hammonds’ perseverance in her sport. The issue also covered the then ongoing drought in Georgia, a feature article looking into immigration and the journeys of undocumented immigrants into the U.S and a story on local Black leaders in education. Altogether, “Hammonds Sticks it to the Mat” leaves readers considering the many diverse narratives of the Clarke Central High School and Athens community. Story by Maya Shrivastav
The ODYSSEY presents: Band Together, Volume 5 Issue 4:The ODYSSEY Newsmagazine examined the importance of protests, reporting that peaceful rallies and marches were more effective than virtual protests on Facebook. The staff covered the overuse of bottled water and its effects on the environment. Herbert Kohn, a Holocaust survivor, was profiled with his message to Clarke Central High School students, "Never Again," about discrimination. The ODYSSEY focused on paraprofessionals and teachers, highlighting their duties and out-of-pocket expenses to ensure students' learning opportunities. Story by Emma Kissane
The ODYSSEY presents: In the Mind of Schizophrenia, Volume 5, Issue 5:The ODYSSEY Newsmagazine explained a lot about grief, mental illness, and love by reporting on schizophrenia, and the loss of former Assistant principal Dr. Miller Jordan Jr. in 2007. The staff and guest writers covered reactions to Dr. Jordan Jr’s death. Sophomores Nic Colon, Taylor Layne, Babatunde Olumuyiwa, and David White were covered and they provided different stories about how differences brought their team together in, “Fantastic Four.” The ODYSSEY had a big news section with a 5-story spread about schizophrenia, which showed several stories about experiences with schizophrenia. Additionally, the ODYSSEY’s Cultural Buzz section was filled with many reviews. Story by Luke Shannon
The ODYSSEY presents: The Writing's on the Wall, Volume 5 Issue 6:Volume 5, Issue 6 of the ODYSSEY Newsmagazine covered a major issue around Athens and Clarke Central High School gang activity, through an in-depth feature news article on the issue. Additionally, it covered the importance of poetry in the Athens community, the impact of racially offensive language and the consequences of visiting tanning salons on students who frequented them. The ODYSSEY presents: I Can't Read This, Volume 5 Issue 7:In the penultimate issue of this volume, the ODYSSEY covers the inequities of expensive standardized tests and the dangers of illiteracy in the Athens community. An in-depth news story dives into the US Department of Homeland Security’s consideration of Athens for a new Bio and Agro-Defense Facility, while the “Remembering Eve” spread honors Clarke Central High School alumna and murder victim Eve Carson, who left a mark on many people in the community. The ODYSSEY presents: Chasing Easom's Shadow, Volume 5 Issue 8: The ODYSSEY Newsmagazine focused on the retirement of Dr. Maxine Easom after nine years of serving as principal at Clarke Central High School, as well as Felicia Kay, a 2007-08 CCHS senior diagnosed with Autoimmune Hepatitis. An in-depth News article focused on the new state-mandated curriculum that would be implemented in Georgia during the 2008-09 school year. The ODYSSEY Sports section informed students about the former CCHS coaches and parents after whom the sports facilities were named. Story by Isabel Atkinson
