Star Board Term One Week Seven

Principal's Message

Kia Ora Whanau

It has been interesting watching the lead up to the Strike Action taken by PPTA members on Thursday. It was astounding to watch morning news to hear the presenters debate why teachers could not strike at the end of the school day so that children could continue their learning. Do they understand the meaning of a strike ? A strike is when the employees are engaged in a stoppage of work, services, or other activities, as union workers to get better working conditions or wages. Teachers do not make this collective decision lightly and none of us wants to lose time with our learners, or a day’s pay - but there is a preparedness to do so, ultimately in order to better serve our learning community. Thank you for all you had to do on the 16th.

Boarding Note

Last weekend Hope Eales (Boarding Prefect) and Maia Svenson (Head of Main House for Term 1) attended the New Zealand Boarding Schools Associations Student Leadership Hui at Palmerston North Boys High. This was a very worthwhile event as it enabled both Hope and Maia to get some great ideas that we can incorporate into St Matthew’s Boarding.

Yesterday we had an action packed day with the boarders who were in. Basically our day involved a sleep in, brunch, cupcake making, treasure hunts, dance competition, and town leave for everyone.

Pictured below are Fiona Ebbitt and Annabelle Guscott enjoying the cupcake decorating.

Thanks so much to our fabulous tutors Flora and Eleanor, our small group of Hampton dance enthusiasts, and to the kitchen and boarding staff for your help. We had a great day!

Relay for Life

Team Rapid are a group of our Year 12 Senior College students who are participating in the Relay for Life on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th March. The funds raised will go to the Cancer Society's supportive care services, education and awareness programmes, and life-saving cancer research.

Here is the link if you are wanting to contribute to this fantastic cause https://relayforlife.org.nz/rapid

Pi Day

Pi Day was held at Senior College on Wednesday and suffice to say the below were not the winners on the day. The overall winner being Ella McCready with Pi to 67 numbers.

Duke of Ed

Last weekend, the group of Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award girls set off for their training and practice tramp. They enjoyed typically Tararua weather, experiencing beautiful sunshine, wild winds and torrential downpours. From setting up camp, to feeding themselves, to map reading, the girls showed great teamwork and spirit.

A massive thanks to Doug McKenzie and Rob Thorneycroft for giving up their weekend to help.
