Cosmos Flowers Of north America

These flowers are native to Mexico, Guatemala, and Costa Rica!

They are now naturalized in North America and other parts of the world.

Predators of Cosmos Flowers: snails, slugs, and aphids (sap-sucking insects)
Cosmos attract pollinators, and can be great for butterfly gardens!

Seed germination takes 7-10 days and flowers form 60-90 days afterwards.

These guys prefer full sun, but can tolerate some shade. They also belong to the same family as daisies and sunflowers.

They are not very hardy, so they cannot deal with cold temperatures or high winds. They are annuals, meaning they do not make it to the fall or winter but can re-sprout when warmer months are around.

The flowers may only last for a short while, however, they can grow up to four feet tall in the right conditions!

Symbolization

  • Red cosmos represent love and passion
  • Pink cosmos can represent delicate, sometimes feminine love such as hugs, kisses, or mother's love
  • Yellow versions represent friendship or friendly love
  • White represent purity, and faithfulness

In Mexican folklore, these beautiful flowers were said to be great for attracting fairies into gardens. It was said that the flower's magical essence made the fairies feel at home.

These flowers are safe to eat for you and even your pets! They can be used to brew tea and garnish salads or any other dish that you want a pop of color or texture in.
