Welcome, Dustdevil! ⬇️ Scroll Down ⬇️

Monday, July 11, 2022

Dear University community,

  • Summer is here with all its expected challenges…many aggravated by extreme heat. Make sure you stay hydrated and try and limit outdoor activities to early morning and late evening. We expect that there will be substantial demands on the Texas energy grid in the days and weeks ahead, so please do your part to help conserve energy on and off-campus. Keep cool!
  • Our Dusty Camp is underway today and tomorrow, welcoming over 250 students to campus. Let’s welcome everyone with a Dustdevil smile. Camps continue through July and August.
  • Congratulations to students in our TAFE program who recently earned multiple awards at the national 2022 Educators Rising Conference in Washington, D.C.
  • Kudos also go to Dr. Arthur D. Soto-Vasquez and doctoral degree candidate Mariana Sanchez Santos. Their academic paper on Spanish language disinformation leading to the US Capitol insurrection has appeared in the prestigious Cultural Studies <-> Cultural Methodologies Journal.
  • At TAMIU, we want all students to have a chance to complete their degrees. Our Comeback Programs are helping resuming students to do just that. Families and friends of students can learn all about the #Comeback: New Programs for Resuming Students here.
  • Registration for Summer and Fall classes continues. Use our new TAMIU Fund$Finder, a search tool that helps students find scholarships on and off-campus is available. Details are available at go.tamiu.edu/fundSfinder
  • The threat of COVID-19 continues in our community and all communities. Please continue your use of recommended face coverings/masks, in addition to practicing distancing and rigorous hand-washing.

Let’s Go Dustdevils!

Marking Our Past, Signaling Our Future: TAMIU Entrance Pylon Globe Removed

Texas A&M International University's Entrance Pylon Globe has served as a welcoming beacon to TAMIU for the past 27 years. It has marked our past and now signals our future. In partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation and the City of Laredo, this area now becomes part of Laredo’s dynamic growth with the conversion of Loop 20 into Laredo’s second interstate highway, IH-69 West. The University is proud to help lead this catalytic change. Elements of the pylon are being retained and will become part of the campus’ continued experience, welcoming new generations to TAMIU. Goodbye, Globe (for now).

TAMIU TAFE Students Victorious at Educators Rising National Competition

TAMIU College of Education students recently rolled up their sleeves to join in a national competition taking place at the 2022 Educators Rising Conference in Washington, D.C. There, 10 TAMIU Texas Association of Future Educators members earned top marks. Job well done, Dustdevils!

TAMIU'S Dr. Soto-Vásquez Publishes Research on Spanish Language Election Disinformation in Prestigious Journal

An academic paper co-authored by TAMIU assistant professor of Communication Dr. Arthur D. Soto-Vásquez and a doctoral degree candidate Mariana Sánchez Santos, was published in the prestigious Cultural Studies ↔ Cultural Methodologies Journal. The paper, entitled, El Cabal, Vacunas, y Donald Trump: An Analysis of Spanish-Language Disinformation Leading Up to the U.S. Capitol Insurrection, appeared in the Journal's March 2022 edition. The authors also recently presented their work at the prestigious International Communication Association Conference in Paris, France in May.

Can you tell us about the important research opportunity this provides to students and how this could figure prominently in their future and careers?

One thing my colleagues and I have always been grateful for is the support TAMIU has given to us through various grants which enable us to work with students over the summer. They learn how to use the literature they read and develop scholarly arguments. The last three summers we’ve had students from the research bootcamp help us. A lot of times, those programs need students to apply - so my advice I tell everyone is show up and apply.

- Dr. Arthur D. Soto-Vásquez
