Photo 2 Portfolio jake goodwin

In this semester of photography class, I tried to go beyond the photo-taking. The capturing of the image is one thing, but the editing and enhancements are an entire new world of photography. I mixed together my photography 1-2 and graphic design 1-4 skills to create something that is than just a picture. Photo manipulation and enhancements as opposed to simply taking a picture were the focus of my portfolio this semester. Enjoy the excessive mentioning of stickball!

This is one of my favorite projects of the semester, one where we used PSTDs, which are basically layer edits, to make an image completely new. These images are probably my favorite edited pictures I have created this semester, as I think the edits enhance the photos so much.
This was an experimental project using cutouts of ourselves and Photoshop tools. Photoshop is something I know very well and I find it easy to use, but I never knew this tool existed, so it was very fun to work with. The recurring colors make for a very appealing visual.
This was my pick 2, create 8 project, where we had to choose two photography strategies and make eight images out of those. I chose selective focus and the rule of thirds, and I believe these pictures turned out to look very good. The picture of Max with the flowers is one of my favorite photos from this semester.
This was my original independent project where I decided to capture my dog, a five year old English cream golden retriever named Louie, in as many different sleeping positions as I could. What I didn't realize when I first came up with this idea was the dependence on my dog, so of course it didn't turn out exactly how I wanted. I decided that I wanted my grid to be pictures of Louie sleeping pointing towards a picture of her standing. This took a lot of experimentation and taking/searching for pictures of her sleeping in the birds eye angle I wanted. Something I learned is that you should never depend a project with a due date on how photogenic and good of a listener your dog is.
Going from the dark, depressing late winer days of January and February, beyond the exciting days that are Christmas and New Years and following the heartbreaking Superbowl loss to the colorful and happy spring scenes is my favorite transition. In addition, beautiful lighting and blooming blossoms always help with capturing the cold days turning to warm. I love the versatility of this shoot as I implemented so many different photography strategies which is why I think these pictures turned out so well.
When your friend has a career week in stickball, he is worthy of a (hopefully) professional looking poster for it. I mean, come on, two MVPs in three days full of good pitching and insane batting calls for a graphic to be made. This photoshoot was super fun and turned out great, though they were a struggle at times to mask and add to the poster. Regardless, I really like how the colors and photos turned out, and I think this poster should be hung up in Tate's room, perhaps even his college dorm.
These are the infamous one of a kind Strath Haven Stickball League sports cards. I am so proud of these and love how they look, and I think these will be a great memory that I can look back on in the future and reminisce the glory days of stickball. Stickball was a game I played every day this year during lunch and it unironically played a huge role in my senior year. I am proud to say that I, in part, got stickball into the yearbook and panther press, and what a beautiful thing that is to be able to say. As for the cards themselves, I created a template after a lot of experimenting then found a font and created my own logo, which took a while in itself. Then, I got everybody's actual statistics, nicknames, positions, and took pictures of everybody and here is the final product. No doubt my favorite project of the year.
This is the paper project, where we were given only lights and paper and had to make professional projects with only those. While these aren't my favorite images, I think the many different colors make for a very interesting shoot.
The cupcake lab was one that I struggled with. I was unable to grasp the creativity necessary to make the outcome the best it could be, though I have a few good pictures to come out of it. I sure hope the newly-frosted married cupcakes are still going strong.
Who would have thought that multiple ghosts walk the halls of Strath Haven High School? I will answer that question, me and likely most students. I remember struggling with this project last year, but this year was much easier for me, showing my improvement in all aspects of photography. This is among my favorites of this semester, these pictures are so awesome.
This was a photo story on a class involving rock music, one where the class time that day was spent experimenting and practicing songs that these students had created and would perform. Music makes for such interesting pictures, in particular pictures that express emotion and creativity.
The flower lab was one that took patience and creativity, two things that aren't my strengths when it comes to photography. Regardless, these pictures came through a few fill-ups and dumping, experimentation, and results. I love the way the paint flows through the water and contrasts or parallels the color of the flowers.
The goal of freezing time was achieved, and these photos turned out very well. Capturing the pause of a usually moving object is very satisfying, the same as capturing Nathaniel's face while sliding down the stairs.
The toys project was undoubtedly one of my favorites that I did this semester. While very annoying and time-consuming to create, these pictures are so visually-appealing and I am so happy with the outcome of this shoot.
In this project, we took the same picture four times with one setting changed: white balance. With different settings, completely different images were the outcome, as seen in the results. This project was definitely a struggle, not because of difficulty, but rather due to the freezing weather outside.
