Volume 5 Enrichment & Review

It is not always the people who start out the smartest who end up the smartest. -Carol Dweck

This volume is all about POWER.

Challenge 1

Battery Power

Do batteries really power the world?

Go on a scavenger hunt to find things powered by batteries. What kind of batteries can you find?

Did you know that batteries were invented because of an argument and a frog?

Take notes on the most important information that you learned from the TEDTalk or in the article above. Then, use it to create a graphic novel or comic strip to explain the information. You can sketch it out on paper or use the app Comic Page Creator (in Self-Service on your iPad).

If you have a battery powered toothbrush and a few household supplies, try making an ArtBot! See the video for an example. It calls for a pool noodle, but you can swap that for a plastic cup if needed.

Challenge 2:

Brain Power

Did you know that you can train your brain to get into certain habits? These habits help you become a critical thinker and creative problem-solver.

Choose one of the habits that you find challenging. Click on the link below, and scroll until you find that habit. Watch the video that goes along with your habit.

What habit did you choose? What goal can you set for yourself to improve in that area? What resources do you need to achieve your goal?

Doodle a picture that shows you reaching your goal. What will it look like?

Make sure to power up your heart and muscles each day this week. Check out a workout video on Gonoodle.com!

Challenge 3

Glow Power

Everything is better when it glows in the dark. This activity uses 10-12 glow sticks to explore geometry! No worries if you don't have any on hand. Toothpicks, straws, or sticks work just as well.

Follow the step-by-step directions to create and categorize different polygons and make glowing patterns!

Challenge 4

Superpower

What if you were a superhero? What super strengths would you have? Would you have weaknesses? Create a trading card as a superhero. Model it after yourself, but add fantasy elements.

Write a movie script with your superhero as a character. Don't forget to include a problem and solution. You'll also want to include dialogue and stage directions for your actors. If you have enough people around, act it out and record your movie!

Looking for more? Explore phototropism, bioluminescence, or sustainable energy.
