Nitrogen open online course now available in Spanish and Portuguese

As a tool for raising public awareness on the nitrogen challenge, a massive open online course (MOOC) titled ‘Nitrogen: A Global Challenge’ (or the ‘Nitrogen MOOC’ for short) was launched in 2018. The MOOC was developed by the University of Edinburgh under the NEWS India-UK project. This world-first course on nitrogen is freely available, self-paced and was designed for everyone with a high school knowledge.

Although the Nitrogen MOOC is unique on its own, what makes it even more special is that it is available in 11 languages. The original, English version was shortly followed by a Hungarian version, then by six further translations developed under the South Asian Nitrogen Hub (Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Nepalese, Dari and Sinhalese). Raising interest within the international nitrogen research community, the MOOC was translated to Chinese, and in one week on Tuesday the 19th of July, the course will launch in Spanish and Portuguese. Registration is now open to both courses:

New Chair of the International Nitrogen Initiative

We are pleased to announce that Dr. David Kanter is the new Chair of the International Nitrogen Initiative, effective July 1st. David is an Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at New York University (NYU) in the US and has served as Vice-Chair of INI for the past three years. He also serves on the Project Management Board of INMS. As Chair, he hopes to establish several cross-cutting research themes across regions, expand the scope of INI conferences to include more of the social sciences and humanities, and increase INI’s presence in policy forums at national, regional and global levels. We look forward to working with him and would like to especially thank the outgoing Chair Dr. Raghuram for his tireless work and support of INMS and the South Asian Nitrogen Hub over the past three years.

Developing Roadmaps for Sustainable Nitrogen Management Workshop - Paris

For three days in May 2022, an interdisciplinary group of scholars, stakeholders, and policy experts from 19 countries gathered in Paris, France to reflect on previous national N policies in order to begin developing national roadmaps for sustainable nitrogen management.

This workshop was a collaboration between INMS, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Institute of Advanced Studies in Paris and organized by Dr. David Kanter.

This was the first in-person INMS meeting in over two years and a powerful effort to continue building on the momentum of the UNEA Resolution 5/2 on Sustainable Nitrogen Management.
