Warm Welcome!
Please welcome to Mary Hazel Axibal. Mary Hazel joins Northwestern Emergency Medicine as an administrative assistant with over 17 years of experience in administrative and customer relations. She will be assisting with many of the research initiatives in the department including developing future research newsletters and communications.
Newly Funded Grants
Congratulations to Dr. Kyriacou who will serve as the site-PI on a newly funded R01 study from the National Cancer Institute. He will be working in collaboration with a team lead by Dr. Reyes-Gibby at MD Anderson Cancer Center. The project, entitled "Improving emergency care and outcomes of immune-related adverse events: The immune-related emergency disposition index (IrEDi)."
The study will involve four of the Comprehensive Oncologic Emergency Research Network (CONCERN) emergency departments (MD Anderson, Ohio State University, Northwestern University and University of California San Diego). The project seeks to: 1) develop a probability model [the Immune-related Emergency Disposition Index (IrEDi)] to risk stratify ED patients on Immune Check Point Inhibitors for ED disposition and 2) validate IrEDi using prospective data and determine the predictive validity of irEDi. We will conduct a prospective cohort study of ED cancer patients who had received ICPIs, recruiting 1500 total from 4 sites over a 3- year period.
Congratulations to Dr. Bailitz who will serve as the PI on a newly received grant from Caption Health. Caption Health is an ultrasound company with expertise in utilizing artificial intelligence. The study, entitled "A feasibility study to evaluate the performance of Caption Health Lung Guidance and Interpretation" is being undertaken in partnership with collaborators at Yale. The two sites will seek to enroll patients in the ED and ICU to undergo bedside lung ultrasounds (by both expert and novice ultrasonographers) and Caption Health's AI will be used to interpret the US images to evaluate the performance of the software's interpretation.
Congratulations to Drs. Post and Lundberg who recently received new funding from USAID. They will lead the Northwestern team working in partnership with Kansas State University to perform surveillance and disease modeling through the Global SARS-CoV-2 Surveillance Project (GASSP) dashboard designed to track new strains and examine the effects of water insecurity in relation to COVID-19. The Global SARS-CoV-2 Surveillance Project (GASSP) dashboard was created by Dr. Post and her team at Northwestern and is available here.

Resident Spotlight
Congratulations to Dr. Peter Serina for accepting a research fellowship position in the T32 fellowship at Brown University. The AHRQ Post Doctoral Fellowship Program (National Research Service Award) is housed in the Center for Gerontology and Healthcare Research in the School of Public Health at Brown University. The fellowships trainees come from multiple disciplines across the university including both clinicians and non-clinician scientists.
Dr. Serina will take part in this fellowship for two years while also working as an attending in Rhode Island Hospital, the principal teaching hospital for the Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
Teaching Award
Congratulations to Dr. Alex Lundberg! The Program in Public Health Curriculum Committee recently informed Dr. Lundberg that he is the recipient of a 2021 Teaching Excellence Award for having been an instructor in PUB_HLTH 421 Intermediate Biostatistics in fall 2021.
This is an amazing accomplishment, particularly for a new faculty member in the first quarter teaching this course.
Publication Spotlight
Congratulations to Drs. Alex Lo and Logan Wedel on their recent publication in JACEP Open entitled "COVID-19 hospital and emergency department visitor policies in the United States: Impact on persons with cognitive or physical impairment or receiving end-of-life care" available here.
They evaluated the visitor policies of 352 hospitals during the early stages of the COVID pandemic, finding that nearly half of the hospitals had ED-specific visitor policies. However, among the ED policies less than a third had policy exceptions for patients with cognitive impairment, physical impairments, or receiving end-of-life care.
This manuscript is the final product of the project for which Dr. Wedel was also awarded the 2nd prize in the Health Services & Policy category at the American Geriatric Society Annual Meeting.
