Fall 2021

The BSOM Clinical Simulation Center remains open and simulation sessions are being held with social distancing measures in place. Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your training needs.

If you anticipate needing access to the Center over Thanksgiving (Nov. 25-26, 2021) or Winter break (Dec. 24-Jan. 3, 2022), please contact us.

Announcements

BSOM ICSP has applied for full accreditation in the field of Teaching/Education through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and will have a site visit in December. We remind all simulation educators to complete our online orientation course and review the 2021 Guidelines for the Use of the Clinical Simulation Center.

The application for the 2022 ECU Emergency Medicine Simulation Fellowship is available on ECU HR’s website (position #600029).

Expanding the Field

Becky Gilbird, Administrative Director, spoke to the BSOM M3 Medical Education Distinction Track to discuss different types of simulation modalities and how they fit into the medical curriculum. She also did a presentation on simulation resources available to faculty for the BSOM Faculty Development Mentoring Advice Program.

The BSOM Clinical Simulation team celebrated Healthcare Simulation Week by giving tours of the mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit. Thank you to all the students, staff, and faculty who participated!

Vidant EastCare had multiple day-long airway courses. BSOM Clinical Simulation Center staff facilitated EastCare’s Advanced EMT course Technical Scope of Practice (TSOP) evaluations.

BSOM M2 students participated in clinical application scenarios where they had the opportunity to apply their knowledge to assess, diagnose, and treat acutely ill patients.

Emergency medicine residents practiced essential emergency procedural skills such as chest tube and pigtail catheter insertion, and needle cricothyrotomy.

Internal Medicine resident interprofessional simulation sessions have resumed. Participants include Simulation Fellow, Critical Care Fellows, and Pitt Community College Nurses and Respiratory Therapy.

Regional and Military Activity

The BSOM Simulation Center’s collaboration with Ragged Edge Solutions to provide prolonged field care training for Special Operations Forces continues using the Healthcare Simulation Unit and MV-22 Osprey Transport Simulator. Special thanks to the ECU Honors College for assisting with these programs!

Training sessions for the 2nd Marine AirWing at Cherry Point continue quarterly. These include procedural skills and simulation sessions at the BSOM Center and transport simulations using the MV-22 Osprey.

The Clinical Simulation Program traveled to Lillington, NC, in September to collaborate in a moderate sedation course. BSOM Clinical Simulation partners with ECU School of Dental Medicine and Eastern AHEC for this program.
