LSU CLIMATE SCIENTISTS VISIT 7TH GRADE

Louisiana State University climate scientists visited our 7th-grade science classes on February 6th. The scientists discussed climate change with the students. They also worked with the 7th graders to take tree core samples outside on our campus. The students learned that coring the trees does not hurt the trees. The core samples that the LSU climate scientists take from trees are small (less than the diameter of a pencil) and non-destructive to the tree. The tree will heal itself fairly quickly, similar to when a spout is removed after tapping a tree for maple syrup.

Thank you to LSU for their help with this important project for our students.

7th grade (rising 8th grade) scheduling meeting

On February 10th, our high school admin team and academic counselors held an informational meeting for 7th grade students (rising 8th graders) during their advisory class. The high school counselors and administrators presented an overview of the high school program, the scheduling process and the opportunities along with the implications of taking high school Carnegie unit classes as 8th graders.

For this year’s contest, which is open to all students in grades 6 – 12 and which comes with cash prizes for the top middle and high school entries, students are to respond to a prompt with their thoughts on the current state of rights and civil liberties in the United States. The prompt is a quote from Sylvanie Williams, an African American educator, activist, and leader, who compared the plight of African American women to flowers mistreated and trampled underfoot and whose work will be featured in THNOC’s upcoming special exhibit on the fight for women’s suffrage in Louisiana opening this Spring.
