2022 SCHOOL CAMP DATES

  • Year 5: Lady Northcote Recreation Camp - Tuesday 4th October to Friday 7th October

Welcome to Spring everyone! Plenty of things to look forward to in upcoming months, not least of which are better weather, ‘longer’ days, sporting finals and more. With two weeks to go before the school holidays there are still lots of activities on the school calendar to ‘tick off’ before we finish Term 3.

FATHERS DAY There will be a Father’s Day stall held at school tomorrow with lots of goodies available for purchase for Sunday. To all Viewbank Dads – happy Father’s Day!! Hope you have a wonderful day.

WORKING BEE There is a further working bee scheduled for this Saturday, commencing at 9am. Whilst we understand it is the sporting finals time of the year and with Father’s Day ‘looming’ it may be difficult to spare an hour or two but if you could it would be greatly appreciated. Our new vegie garden is coming along nicely and there was a small, but loyal and hard-working crew in attendance last Sunday morning to oversee and facilitate the shifting of our shipping containers into the vegie patch. These will be used to house our gardening equipment and also as a teaching space (once we cut the front off one of them). Grateful thanks to our working party on Sunday – the Deanes, Parrents and Cadusch families.

PMP LAND The final Term 3 transition event is set down for next Tuesday when we host our 2023 Foundation students for PMP Land. PMP stands for Perceptual Motor Program. The Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) is a movement-based program which helps younger students improve their eye/hand and eye/foot coordination, fitness, balance, locomotion and eye-tracking skills.

DIVISIONAL ATHLETICS Good luck to our 17 representatives who compete next Wednesday in the Divisional Athletics Championships at Meadow Glen Athletics Track. This event follows on from our school and then district competitions.

STUDENT DISCO We are thrilled to be counting down the days to the Student Disco – the first in three years – when we open the party doors on Friday, September 9. Foundation to Grade 2 will jive from 6pm to 7pm, followed by Grades 3 to 6 from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. We still need some parent volunteers, so please check out the advertisement later in this newsletter and volunteer if you can.

Kind regards,

Bill Kersing

Principal

R U OK?Day Thursday 8 September is the national day of action that reminds us that every day is the day to ask, ‘are you okay?’.

We are encouraged to start a meaningful conversation if we spot the signs that someone we care about might be struggling with life.

The R U OK? Website has lots of excellent information, videos, resources and strategies to help you ask R U OK?.

Have a great week.

Gill

School Disco As Mr Kersing mentioned above, the school disco is fast approaching. We have had approximately 450 responses that have indicated that students are attending or have declined the event (out of approximately 640). If you know that your child is not attending, we are asking that you ‘Decline’ the event. This does two things - for us we have a better idea of numbers; and for you, you will not receive any more reminder emails. We will be closing the event off on Thursday 8th September at 4pm. Those who have not accepted or declined the event will continue to receive reminder emails until then.

All volunteers at the disco (BBQ, inside supervising, packing up etc) MUST have a current Working With Children Check. Volunteers will be required to sign in on one of the school iPads which will be located at the gym. If you have signed in before and set up a ‘Quick PIN’ this will take less than one minute. If you have not signed in before, or set up a Quick PIN, this will be a lengthy process. You must bring your WWCC with you, enter the details, and have it sighted. If you are at the school over the next few days or early next week, please drop into the office and they will be very happy to help you set up your Quick PIN.

Planning Week Next week (5th to 9th September) will be Planning Week across the school. Throughout the week, all classroom teachers will be timetabled to spend a whole day planning for Term 4, along with the other teachers in their team. Specialist and Support teachers also receive time throughout the week to plan for the following term. Teachers meet together to reflect and provide feedback on the learning that has occurred across this term, discuss student data that has been collected and use this information to form future planning.

The teaching and learning for Term 4 will be discussed and planned, with planners being developed for English and Mathematics. Inquiry units will also be reviewed and planned. Common assessment tasks will be documented, and excursions and in-school activities researched and booked.

Planning Week allows our staff the opportunity to engage in professional discussions and develop the rich, differentiated learning programs that allow our students to engage fully in their learning.

Teaching teams will plan on the following days with students having specialist lessons for the day:

  • Monday - Year 3 and Year 4
  • Tuesday - Year 1
  • Wednesday - Year 5 and Year 6
  • Thursday - Year 2
  • Friday - Foundation

Working With Children Checks As mentioned in previous Viewbank Voices, our child safety obligations have increased. There are a number of policies that volunteers have to now abide by. With many opportunities arising for parents and volunteers to help out at school, it is vital that all ‘Working With Children Checks’ (WWCC) are up to date. Unfortunately, we have had to turn some parents away recently as their WWCC had lapsed. Upcoming events that will require the presentation of a valid WWCC (or approved exemption - e.g. a current member of the police force, registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching), and have viewed the material outlined above, include helping at the Father’s Day Stall (2nd September), the School Discos (9th September), excursions, helping out as part of the Garden Program and with reading in the classroom. If you do not have a WWCC, please go to https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/ and follow the steps for a ‘Volunteer’ check.

SunSmart Policy - Hats Each year in August, we make a decision regarding hat wearing that is in line with our SunSmart Policy. http://www.viewbankps.vic.edu.au/s/SunSmart-Policy-9rp9.pdf. Hats will be required to be worn daily from Monday 29 August until 30 April. All students must wear a sun protective hat that shades the face, neck and ears for all outdoor activities.

Have a great weekend.

HELP NEEDED – SECOND HAND UNIFORM SALES We are seeking a parent volunteer to man the second-hand uniform sales at the school every Friday for half an hour at 8.45am to 9.15am. Please contact the office if you are able to help. Unfortunately, the Second Hand Uniform shop will be unable to open until we have a helper. Thank you

LATE ARRIVALS Please ensure children who arrive late go straight to the office to be marked as present. If the child does not come to the office for a late pass a text message will be sent to the parent/carer notifying that the child is absent. Late arrivals can only be time stamped at the office. When Parents/carers record the late arrival in Compass it provides us with the explanation but does not mark your child as present. When your child presents at the office, staff will record your child’s actual arrival time which updates the class roll.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK (WWCC) A ‘Working with Children Check’ is just one part of creating and maintaining a child-safe environment. It is a requirement that all parents/careers who wish to volunteer or participate in school activities have a current WWCC. https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/

Kind regards,

Book Week Celebrations There was definitely much excitement and lots of fun to be had last week as students and staff joined to celebrate Book Week – Dreaming With Your Eyes Open with a costume parade, Where’s Wally Hunt and an author visit. It was wonderful to hear from Dale Baker, author and illustrator, who shared his books ‘Arty Farty Marty’ and ‘Surf Dogs” with us on Thursday 25th August. Some students were lucky enough to take a copy home! Look out for more of his books when you visit the library. Thank you to our wonderful school community (parents, students and staff) for enthusiastically supporting Book Week.

VPS SWPBS MOVIE DAY We are so proud of all our students here at Viewbank Primary School for achieving their first ‘BIG’ school wide reward! 2022 began the journey of our new reward system for SWPBS. Would you believe our students have demonstrated 15,000 positive behaviours? They have lived our school values of Respect, Resilience, Responsibility and Kindness. This accumulation of behaviours has led to 1500 bees being contributed to our hive and 3 honey pots, 2 ‘SMALL’ rewards and now we have achieved our very exciting ‘BIG’ reward!!! * To celebrate this amazing achievement, we had a movie day, which Hoyts has most generously sponsored. The Hoyts cinema experience included individualised boxes of popcorn as well as prizes which consisted of DBOX movie passes, movie passes and vouchers for a Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream cake! Some students have reflected on this eventful day:

“It was lots of fun watching the movie. I think it made me feel really happy that we were the ones who earnt the reward and that me, and everyone else in the room felt very proud. I think that it was such a good thing that the whole school contributed to the day by showing good behaviour and the reward for doing so, was definitely one that made the students feel extremely special.” Darcy Kingham 5F

“The HOYTS movie day was certainly enjoyable. We were provided with some of the most pleasurable popcorn and an entertaining film. Throughout the year we have been working hard to earn our big reward and we have finally earned it with a number of acts of respect, of kindness and resilience. All of the students showed respect by listening nicely as well as showing responsibility and cooperating fairly. We all showed kindness and were aware of the others in the room. Prizes were won and no one got upset if they didn’t win a prize. We all showed our school values of respect, responsibility, kindness and resilience.” Lexi Cook 5D

“I think the experience was quite fun! The popcorn tasted delicious and was super buttery. The movie was a very different idea (it’s something we’ve never done before at school) but don’t get me wrong it was a great one! I loved it! I sat with five of my friends which made me feel nice inside because we got to share it together and whisper about our favourite parts of the movie. Overall, it was an amazing moment!” Pip Sherlock 6B

“Yesterday our class loved the movie (A Bugs Life). Our class felt relaxed as we enjoyed our buttery popcorn and sat on our comfy pillows. Our class loved it so much that we wished it had lasted forever. At the end it was really fun because of all the prizes. I am also really proud of my RRRK cards because that is the reason that we got to have a movie day.” Amy Benny 2T

“On the 30th of August, the 3-6’s and the F-2’s attended a Movie Day. We earnt this whole school reward by completing three honey pots via the SWPBS program. As well as watching a movie we also got a free dress day. Before the movie started the teachers announced we would be getting popcorn thanks to HOYTS Northland. Overall the day was great and Oddball was a great movie, and it was really fun!On behalf of all the students Sumaya A and Nhi H 4R

UPDATE: Saturday 3rd September will now be an all-day Working Bee so families can attend after morning commitments! 9am to 4pm
