In January 2022, the ACC Fire Training Academy approached the Instructional Web (IW) team with a project request. They wanted to make their student handbook, a 30+ page PDF document, into a website.
The client stated that the current content was "too dense.” The challenge was to break it up to a more digestible, robust form that is easy to read while being informative about legal policies, dress code, safety requirements etc.
The client visualized the website handbook as both a reference guide and an orientation. Once a student clicked through the pages, they wanted them to take a quiz to underscore their learning. To add a level of accountability, they would also be directed to an online form to acknowledge they read and understood the handbook.
Originally the client discussed having the handbook hidden, but decided to open it to prospective students so they would understand the program requirements in advance of applying.
The project was done in phases. We first organized the initial content into our WordPress Theme. Later we added a quiz and form.
Branding conformed to ACC style for continuity and consistency.
We assisted the client with content editing, and added customized icons, graphics and multimedia components.
We used a clear navigational structure and simplified information architecture.
We added bio pages for each faculty to highlight their experience and background.
Information was clarified for potential and current students.
Our focus was on user-centered visual design.
In partnership with Instruction Video, we will be adding video and audio clips to enrich the user experience.
