No Es Lo Que Te Imaginas Jerianise correa

“New York City'' is known as the capital of the world, but it is much more than Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, and the famous Brooklyn Bridge. It is a city filled with cultures, communities, and unordinary experiences. Throughout the creation of this project, I have been inspired by the way NYC is “perfectly” marketed to tourists, which led me to focus on comparing and contrasting the tourist parts of NYC with what New Yorkers visualize in their everyday lives. It was important for me to photograph this reality because I grew up in a part of the city that is not embraced by tourists. Exploring other neighborhoods that are also not particularly marketed as “NYC,” has assisted me in understanding the inequalities around the city. However, I’ve created the most memorable moments of my life in most of the underrated parts of the city and with “No Es Lo Que Te Imaginas (It's Not What You Imagine),” I aspire for viewers to have an insight of the city and understand that New York City is more than what it is known to be. If you take the time to explore more into the city, you learn more about the real New York and create unique experiences as opposed to traditional tourist ones.

Jerianise is a first & second generation Latina photographer, born and raised in New York City. She's currently a junior at the High School of Art and Design, where she pursues photography as her major. She explores different styles of photography but her work mostly focuses on her personal curiosities. As she continues to expand on her focal point, she aspires to allow photography to continuously push her out her comfort zone in order to portray the trajectories of the world around her.

This project was created in Future Imagemakers in the NYU Department of Photography and Imaging at Tisch School of the Arts in Spring 2023.
