REPORTS AND THREE WAY CONFERENCES Teachers are hard at work preparing Semester 1 reports which are due to be made available to parents via Compass in the final week of term. The first day of Term 3 is set aside as a pupil free day in order to give opportunity for student, parents and teachers to discuss these reports and for students to share commentary on their progress – successes, areas to work on and more. Information about booking up times for these will be sent out prior to the end of term.
SCHOOL COUNCIL Just an early reminder for the diary (whichever form it takes these days!). The June School Council meeting is scheduled for 7pm on Tuesday, June 13. I will be contacting councillors soon to determine whether the meeting will be face to face or via WebEx.
ATTITUDES TO SCHOOL SURVEY All students in Grades 4 to 6 have recently completed an Attitudes To School Survey (AtoSS). This survey was conducted by our Student Agency team leader, Bonnie Boness, who works each week with our student leaders on a range of activities, conversations and discussions in order to activate student voice and try to give students greater say in what they learn. The AtoSS is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education to assist schools to gain an understanding of students’ perceptions and experience of school. Students were asked about their thoughts and feelings in relation to their school, their learning, peer relationships, resilience, bullying, health and wellbeing, physical activity, and life in general. The survey results will be reported back to the school in aggregate form throughout the survey period. All survey data that is made available in reports are for groups of students only so that no individual student can be identified. We will share these results in newsletters in early to mid-term 3 when the data is made available to us.
SIBLING ENROLMENTS At the risk of repeating myself (which I am!), we are very keen to know what our sibling enrolments are likely to be for 2024 so we encourage you to enrol your child as soon as possible. This will assist greatly with our forward planning, and help us understand how many out of zone enrolments we may be able to cater for. Enrolments are coming in steadily and we are grateful for the early notification of these and the prompt response to our newsletter reminders.
DIVISIONAL CROSS COUNTRY Congratulations to Inaya, Joshua, Jade, Darragh, April, Daniel, Zachary, Vibha, Jeremy and Harvey who all qualified for the Divisional Cross Country which was run yesterday at Banyule Flats. Hopefully, results will appear later in this newsletter, but I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all students on their efforts wherever they placed.
Happy first day of winter to everyone.
Kind regards,
Bill Kersing
Principal
Planning Week Next week (5 June to 9 June) is our Term 2 Planning Week. Traditionally, this normally occurs in the last or second last week of term. However, this term we have a short week due to the King’s Birthday Public Holiday, and we are hoping that we will be moving our Year 3 and 4 classes to their new rooms at Jilinga.
Planning Week is where your child/ren’s specialist classes are compressed into one day and they do not have specialist classes at any other time throughout the week. All classroom teachers in a year level (e.g. Foundation) have the same day together to plan.
This day is to reflect on the past term, and to plan for Term 3. A question we sometime have from parents is ‘Will my child have the same Specialist Teacher? e.g. Mr Prell for PE’. The answer is (like all good questions) ‘it depends’. The reason for this is that we have a number of part time staff in specialist roles and they may not be available on the allocated days. Our Specialist Teachers also receive time to reflect on Term 2 and to plan for next term.
The timetable for next week is as follows:
- Monday 5 June: Year 5
- Tuesday 6 June: Foundation
- Wednesday 7 June: Year 3 and Year 6
- Thursday 8 June: Year 1 and Year 2
- Friday 9 June: Year 4
Energy/Hydration Drinks In the last week or so, we have had a number of students bringing energy/hydration drinks to school – specifically Prime Hydration drinks. While the hydration drinks are not the same as the energy drinks (these energy drinks generally have an unsafe level of caffeine for children), we strongly encourage students to not bring these to school. These include items such as Prime, Gatorade and Powerade (and others in this type of drink). These drinks have been designed and marketed to people who are involved in strenuous physical activity and are losing electrolytes through excessive sweating. Whilst some of our students do work up a thirst while they compete for the World Cup Soccer Final on the Viewbank PS oval on a Thursday at lunchtime, or throw the winning goal at the NBA final on a Friday at lunch, water will be more than enough to quench their thirst – particularly during winter in Melbourne.
Have a great weekend. Winter is here!
