Teaching geography has been lots of fun this week. The children began by with an atlas and used the contents page to locate the map of the world. Once they found this they had to identify the seven continents. We talked about how big the world is and what makes each continent special.
Once the children had labelled the seven continents on their world maps, we then located the North and South Poles. Using their compass knowledge the children labelled these icy extremes and were fascinated by the coldest regions on Earth. We then looked at the equator which led us nicely into our next lesson about what it would be like to live in a hot place.
We looked more closely at the continent of Africa and located Kenya on our map of the world. The children compared pictures of Kenya and the UK, which led to a discussion about similarities and differences. We explored the question of, “Would you prefer to live in a cold or hot place?” And the children used brilliant oracy to communicate the reasons for their choices.
