Bucs fall to Rockets in season opener by Riley Vining and Alexandra Bakker

WHAT HAPPENED:

Grand Haven football team kicked off their season against Reeths Puffer on Thursday, August 24. They ended the night with a loss of 32-20. Within the first minutes, the Bucs fumbled the ball, leading to a touchdown by the Rockets. The rest of the night was similar, with six overall turnovers, including two on special teams. Grand Haven led a fierce offensive game with 289 yards. However, they struggled to put it in the endzone. The Rockets maintained their early lead, and the Bucs couldn't catch up.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN:

The Bucs’ record fell 0-1 for the start of the season. The new team was disappointed but vowed to practice hard to improve for the rest of the season.

KEY PLAYERS:

  • Junior Gus Abraham racked up four tackles and an assist. He devastated the Rocket backfield with a sack and a tackle for loss.
  • Sophomore quarterback Xavier Rodriguez passed for 156 yards and rushed for 72. He was the dominant offensive force for the Buccaneers and saw the endzone three times.

THEY SAID IT:

  • “We have some good things and we have some bad things,” Senior captain Josh McManus said. “We have to make our corrections and practice harder, that way we can better unite as a team.
  • “We’ve got some inexperienced guys playing right now who made some mistakes,” Head coach Mike Farley said. “But I’m not going to sit here and act like it’s all about the kids. The coaching staff has got to get better, and as the head coach, I’ve got to get better. But, there are a lot of good things. The biggest thing is that this is a teachable moment, and we need to battle back and get ready for next week."

The Bucs face off against Traverse City West on Friday, September 2, at 7:00 P.M.
