Online Workshop on Sustainable Tourism in The Gambia

COURSE DESCRIPTION

A seminar/workshop involving an application of theory and practice relating to an urban or regional scale project (URP 6483). An advanced study of the environmental, economic, and socio-cultural aspects of sustainable tourism development, and the basic concepts and theories of sustainability in tourist destinations. Topics include sense of place, identity, community participation, sustainable design of city spaces and tourist places. Emphasize on sustainable tourism potentials, tourism futures and marketing tourism destinations (ARC 6513).

"The aim of sustainable tourism [is] to improve the tourism phenomenon in such a way to contribute to the regional economy and local community without destroying the environment, society, and historical, natural, and cultural entities" (Doganer 2017 citing Boyne, 2003).

Course Outcomes

(1) Students will build international communication and networking skills; (2) explore methods for analyzing sustainable tourism opportunities; (3) assemble inter-disciplinary master planning concepts for future implementation; and (4) develop measures to evaluate success of sustainable tourism development in The Gambia.
