On the 27th of July 2023, Sustainable Futures held their monthly online seminar series. In this edition, the relationship between the nuclear industry and wider society as well as post-consumer resin (PCR) and its applications were discussed. Hosted by Dr Stephen Lowe from the University of Manchester, the seminar included two talks from Professor Adrian Bull of the Dalton Nuclear Institute and Dr Thomas Franklin from the Henry Royce Institute, both also situated at the University of Manchester.
After an introduction provided by Dr Stephen Lowe, Professor Adrian Bull gave the first presentation of the seminar based on the relationship between the public and the nuclear industry. The talk looked at how the industry has communicated with the public (or sometimes failed to) over the years and how things may change in the future if the sector "got its act together".
Professor Bull’s presentation was concluded with a live Q&A session with attendees.
Dr Thomas Franklin provided the seminar with the second presentation of the day with a talk focused on post-consumer resin and its incorporation into HDPE packaging. The purpose of this project is to find ways to protect PCR from the degradation that occurs in the recycling process in order to underpin a more circular use of plastics.
Another live Q&A session involving attendees of the seminar followed and the event was soon wrapped up.
