place of serenity photographed by: Mia Figueroa

I chose the neighborhood of El Sereno because I want to spread awareness of the gentrification happening here. This neighborhood holds a very special place in my heart El Sereno borders Los Angeles, South Pasadena, and Alhambra. The neighborhood is surrounded by Cal State LA to the east and the USC’s Medical Center to the west.

El Sereno is an overlooked part of Los Angeles that no one really knows. This is a quite neighborhood that has slowly been changing over the years. Because of it’s ideal location and low property values, it is a target of gentrification. Homocides and gun violence rates have lead to a dramatic increase in the past 2 years as a result of covid. L.A. City Councilman Kevin de León, whose district includes El Sereno, said the pandemic has amplified existing inequities.

El Sereno is a mix of newer and older buildings. The newer buildings like cafe’s, and stores have bright colors drawing young adults to these stores and modern “workspaces” sitting adjacent to run down, old warehouses.

Notice the contrast in structures, gentrification displaces longstanding industrial areas, driving up the cost of living in El Sereno.

Rent for houses in the Los Angeles area have gone from $500 to $3,000 within the span of months. Land owners have easy access to preserve affordable housing but they choose not to. This is how they profit off of renters because they live closer to the city.

I took photos of some spots that i feel support the community the most. This elderly man was at peace drawing his surrounding at the El Sereno community garden. The people who run the garden were very sweet and welcoming. The bottom photos were taken at holy grounds which is a well known cafe on Alhambra Avenue. They have an area supporting local businesses and advocating their products.
