Identifying key indicator species and habitats for marine biodiversity change in East Asia
Habitat destruction, pollution, non-indigenous invasive species, over-fishing, and climate change have threatened marine biological communities in East Asia. Scientists from China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Russia, and a few Southeast Asian countries gathered in a workshop titled "Key Indicator Species and Habitats for Marine Biodiversity Change in East Asia" on 28-30 November 2022 and shared their findings on key indicator species, ecosystems types and major pathways resulting in marine biodiversity changes, and provided recommendations for policymakers on biodiversity conservation.
The Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) sponsored the three-day hybrid workshop organised by the Jeju National University with the support of the Northwest Pacific Action Plan (NOWPAP) in Jeju, Republic of Korea. Near 30 participants attended the meeting in person, and around ten speakers and participants attended it virtually.
Enhancing Cooperation with the Busan Metropolitan Government
NOWPAP was invited to the 2022 International Organisation Advisory Group meeting, organised by the Busan Metropolitan Government and the Busan Foundation for International Cooperation, on 1 November 2022 in the Westin Chosun Hotel in Busan. Representatives of thirteen international organisations in the Republic of Korea attended the meeting.

The representatives of the international organisations introduced the overview of their organisations respectively and shared their thoughts on possible cooperation with the Busan Metropolitan City in the future. The NOWPAP representative introduced the history, structure, and ongoing activities of NOWPAP. He highlighted that NOWPAP had supported the organisation of the 7th International Marine Debris Conference, which was held in Busan on 18-23 September 2022. Since the Korean Government endeavours to turn Busan into a marine capital in the region as an office of the United Nations Environment Programme, NOWPAP wishes to explore more opportunities for cooperation with the Busan Metropolitan Government to organise more international events in Busan. NOWPAP can also cooperate with students in Busan to organise beach cleanup campaigns and awareness-raising events on various aspects of environmental protection.
NOWPAP Participated in the 3rd Meeting of the Sustainable Ocean Initiative
Regional Seas Organisations and Regional Fisheries Bodies gathered in the 3rd Meeting of the Sustainable Ocean Initiative Global Dialogue, which was organised by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, with the organisation support of the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea (MABIK) in Busan, Republic of Korea, from 25 to 28 October 2022.
The dialogue was to identify opportunities and approaches for coordination and collaboration between Regional Seas Originations and Regional Fishery Bodies and identify their role in facilitating and monitoring progress towards global goals and targets for the ocean.
Discussing marine policy at the World Ocean Forum
NOWPAP was invited to the marine policy session of the World Ocean Forum on 27 October 2022 in Busan, Republic of Korea. The 2022 World Ocean Forum is the 16th edition of the Davos Forum in the ocean field. The Forum was organised by the Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea, the Busan Metropolitan Government, and Busan Daily News. The theme of the Forum is "Ocean as Uniters, Pursuing Global Cooperation for the good of the planet".
