What Ocean Do You Want? Resumed BBNJ IGC5 High Seas Treaty Toolkit

BACKGROUND

INFORMATION ABOUT IGCFinal:

The greatest opportunity in a generation to conserve ocean life and diversity on a global scale and safeguard 2/3 of the world’s ocean is happening right now.

From the 20th February-3rd March, world governments will gather at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York for the resumed 5th negotiating conference (IGCFinal) to hopefully wrap up negotiations for a brand new global agreement designed to protect marine life on the high seas.

This meeting will continue negotiations from where the previous meeting in August 2022 left off, when governments ran out of time to finalise all aspects of the treaty.

To governments we ask: what ocean do you want?

Some of the world’s greatest minds are coming together to write this rule book for high seas biodiversity governance. They will need to tackle a few key issues which could make or break an ambitious treaty. Many of these issues are technical, but what it comes down to is whether this new treaty will have the power to:

  • Go beyond the current status quo
  • Address power imbalances
  • Restore ocean health

Or will it continue to perpetuate an ineffective and unjust system.

It’s taken almost two decades to get this far. We are almost there.

WHAT'S AT STAKE?

Despite covering half the planet only 1.2% of the High Seas is protected because it lacks clear rules to establish protected areas leaving its marine life vulnerable to exploitation.

Protecting the ocean is critical to those dependent on a healthy marine environment for their food and livelihood. It is also a key natural climate solution. The ocean helps regulate the global climate, mediates temperature and acts as the largest carbon storage, providing essential services for reducing climate change risks globally.
