South Plains and New Mexico JC are Co-champions
Hobbs, NM - South Plains (TX) and New Mexico JC win a share of the 2023 NJCAA DI Men's Outdoor Championship Title, the fourteenth for South Plains and second for New Mexico JC. Both of these teams where co-champions for the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Championship. Both teams finished with 100 total points.
The Texans and Thunderbirds put together an efficient week en route to their national titles. The Texans brought home national titles in the Decathlon, Pole Vault, High Jump, 4x800 Relay, and 4x400 Relay. The Thunderbirds brought home national titles in the Triple Jump and 100m Dash.
Barton earned third place with 79.5 points, and Iowa Western rounded out the top-4 with 55.5 points. Cloud County's 48 points earn them a fifth-place finish, and Butler (KS) earns sixth with 46 points.
South Plains wins its fourteenth title
South Plains' team put together an impressive performance in many different track and field events. The relay teams 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams each brought home titles and led the way for the Texans.
Sophomore Nelvin Appiah-Konadu started out the meet strong for the Texans by placing first in the Decathlon.
Pole vaulter Django Segovia took home the top prize for South Plains.
High Jumper Kudakwashe Chadenga took home first with a mark of 2.13m.
Barton finishes in third
Barton followed last year's third place finish by claiming the same spot this year. The Cougars finished with 79.5 points.
The Cougars took home national champions in there events. Brandon Lloyd won the Discus while Christopher Young took home the Javelin and Shot Put titles.
Lloyd broke the national meet and national overall records with a throw of 65.32m.
