Note from our Head

Dear Oakfield families,

One of the major benefits of the easing of restrictions has been the ability for us to welcome potential new families to Oakfield in-person again on both Open Mornings and private tours. Microsoft Teams and YouTube videos are no substitute for seeing our wonderful school in action.

I am pleased to say that in just under 2 weeks we will be having another Open Morning on Tues 3rd February. If you know of any families who would be interested in joining our Oakfield community, or are curious to see what goes on inside our red gates, then do please pass on the information to them. We would be delighted to welcome them and they can email admissions@oakfield.dulwich.sch.uk to register for the event. Further details can be found on the poster below.

We are also very excited to offer an opportunity for the Pre-Prep parents to have their own Open Morning on the Prep side of the road and meet our wonderful Year 6s later on in the term. We look forward to sharing details of this event soon!

In the meantime I wish you all wonderful weekends,

Moyra Thompson

BIRTHDAY BROADCAST

The perils of live TV mean sometimes things don't always go to plan...but the results are always entertaining!

Monday Assembly

Monday's Assembly saw LOTS of exciting announcements including our esteemed School Council presenting the results and their analysis of the pupil survey to what they would like to see in the playground. The Council talked about how everyone can help look after the new equipment to ensure it lasts as long as possible and so that everyone can enjoy it. Everyone agreed the new equipment will be brilliant to play with and everyone should have a role in putting things away at the end of lunchtime in our new equipment shed which is due to arrive in the coming weeks. Exciting times ahead!

We also saw House Captains and Vice-Captains presented with their badges for this term after the results of voting came in AND our eco warriors were announced for this term. Well done to all of you and represent Oakfield with pride!

ECO WARRIORS

Here is a fantastic page written by Emma in 6CF about this year's Big Garden bird watch with RSPB running from 28th-30th January.

Ms Francis and the eco warriors went to Bel Air Park to see which birds we could spot in our local area (thanks to Mr Allen for also coming along). The eco warriors are also going to spread the message to their classes about this year's Big Garden bird watch. On our travels, we saw a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, a Robin, a Pigeon, a Herring Gull, a Crow and a Blue Tit!

SPORT

HOCKEY

It was great to see ALL our Year 4 Boys and Girls play hockey matches this week in Brixton. Lots of goals were scored! Thank you to the parents who came to support.

And Year 6 children got in on the act too!

Netball

Our U11 Netball Squad is working hard preparing for the upcoming ISA Regional Netball Finals in a few weeks and it was good to see how they are starting to play as a team. Our Maroon Team won 3-1 and Yellows also 6-2. Thank you to parents and grandparents alike who came to support - we really do appreciate it.

Some brill matches and match reports on Rosendale Playing Fields too!

SPORTS STARS OF THE WEEK

Oakfield's Karate and Gymnastics Teams

They can flip and kick!

YEAR 6

SCIENCE

In Year 6 we've been learning about the moon in this week's Science lesson. We used some string to measure the distance from Earth to the moon (3.84m to show 384 million km) and physically walked around to demonstrate one full orbit. Whilst the moon was orbiting the Earth, the Earth rotated 28 times to simulate 28 days. We were surprised to find out that the moon actually rotates on its axis too!

We discussed the different phases of the moon that we see each month and demonstrated this using a torch (the sun), a ping pong ball (the moon) and a spongey ball (Earth).

We also linked all of this to our Maths learning from last week by using compasses to draw a diagram of the moon and its phases!

YEAR 3

Solar Power

In Science this week, we have learnt about the position of the moon relative to the Earth.

Year 3 did an experiment to replicate the distance of the moon orbiting the Earth by using string and chalk. They then ‘orbited’ anti-clockwise whilst their partner, planet Earth, simultaneously rotated.

YEAR 2

Ancient Egypt

We had such an exciting week in Year 2! We started the week off by learning about Aesop’s fables in English. We used iPads to scan QR codes which took us to recordings of some well-known fables. Each team had a different fable to listen to. We then worked collaboratively to rehearse and perform the fable in front of the rest of the class. It was fantastic to be able to discuss the moral of each fable and the lessons we can learn from them.

The week took a tasty turn when we experienced some of the foods that Ancient Egyptians would normally eat, like Domiati cheese, dates, dried figs and Aich Baladi bread. Some children thought that the bread would best be eaten with cheese, while others were not big fans of the figs but tried them anyway.

‘’I will try an Ancient Egyptian trick of putting a date in water as a sweetener,’’ said Harry.

A welcome surprise was our scientific experiment. We learnt what a simple circuit is and explored our knowledge of electricity. First, we sat in a circle holding hands and passed the ‘electric’ current around by squeezing our hands. Then, we worked in teams to create our own simple circuit to light up a bulb or make a buzzer make a noise.

‘’This is the coolest science experiment ever,’’ said Alyssa.

YEAR 1

ENGLISH

The Year 1 children were surprised to receive a letter from Rapunzel’s worried parents. The children helped them by making ‘wanted posters’ to find the mean witch who stole their daughter. They made sure to use descriptive adjectives so the witch could be found!

UPPER FOUNDATION

Road Signs

We had a fantastic walk down Croxted Road recently. We looked at different road signs and talked about what they mean. We practised following the highway code when crossing at traffic lights (a pelican crossing), and we also practised crossing small roads that do not have a crossing to help us. We looked left and right and kept our eyes peeled for cars indicating. The children offered brilliant ideas for what each of the signs are for and we even spoke about number plates, numbers and how we know cars with the green block on their number plates are better for our planet.

After our walk on Friday, the children created their own maps of their local communities. The children discussed what they see on their journeys to school and what buildings they pass. They worked in pairs to add the discussed items and drew additional figures and cars.

LOWER FOUNDATION

There has been a lot of great learning this week but also the opportunity for lots of fun in the playground....
