SCHOOL COUNCIL A reminder to all School Councillors that our November meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday night, November 8, commencing at 7pm in the staffroom.

WORKING BEE The term four working bee is scheduled for Saturday, November 19. In a break with tradition, the working bee will run from 10am until 4pm and as always we encourage you to drop in for as many hours as you can spare. The focus will once again be on developing and enhancing our new vegie patch which now resides in the area once home to a tennis court on our schoolgrounds. Please come along if you can – lunch will be provided. And for those interested, I have included an excerpt from our 2016 50th anniversary book describing the history of the land in the north west corner of the school which next year will be home to our Grade 3 and 4 students.

FOUNDATION 2023 INFORMATION NIGHT The Foundation 2023 information Night will be held in our school gymnasium next Thursday night, November 10 from 6.30pm until 7.30pm. An outline of what is ahead for next year for our new and current families will be presented, as we prepare for the start of school life for 78+ excited Foundation students in 2023.

COMPOSITE GRADES 2023 For our parents in Foundation and Year 1, our current enrolled student numbers for next year have made it likely that there will be two composite classes in Years 1 and 2. This means we will have Year 1s and Year 2s in the same class. This is not an unusual occurrence as in 2022, we have two composite classes in the Year 3 and Year 4 area – 34M and 34C. If you currently have a child in Foundation or Year 1, and you would like consideration made for your child in regard to a composite class, please email your request to the office by Monday, November 7. Please title the email ‘CONFIDENTIAL – COMPOSITE GRADE REQUEST’. Please note that emails received after this date will NOT be accepted.

STATE ATHLETICS FINAL We had some outstanding student performances at the State Athletics Finals on Wednesday. Alexandra Palmer came 13th in Discus with a throw of 16.03m and 6th in the shot put with a distance of 8.5m, Joshua Cadusch came 4th in the 1500m (5 min 15secs) and 4th in the 800m (2 min 37secs), and Brody Cameron came 9th in the Triple Jump with a hop, skip and jump of 8.94m. Congratulations – the Viewbank Primary School community is incredibly proud of your achievements.

OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS CARE PROVIDERS You will know by now that TheirCare will be taking over the running of our Out Of School Hours Care program from January 27 next year. OSHClub will remain in their role (including providing vacation care) until that time. TheirCare was chosen to replace OSHClub after a rigourous tender process conducted by School Council and will continue to provide a stimulating & safe environment where children develop life skills, friendships, confidence, and creativity.

We look forward to welcoming TheirCare to the Viewbank PS community in Term 1 2023.

For further information, visit www.theircare.com.au or call their support office on 1300 072 410

Kind regards,

At this time of the year, with preparations beginning for 2023 class placements, parents often have questions and concerns about the friendships that exist amongst their child’s peer group.

Parents frequently worry about which friendships should be encouraged into next year and which friendships may need a break, if their child has enough friends or what to do if their child doesn't always get along with friends.

The Raising Children Network has some great information about these questions and more. Learning how to make and keep friends is an important part of growing up for school-age children. Having friends is good for children’s confidence, wellbeing and ability to get along with others.

If you would like to find out more and put your mind at ease, you may like to read the information on Supporting your school-age child’s friendships.

Friendships help children develop important life skills like getting along with other people and sorting out conflicts and problems. Children with these skills are less likely to have social and emotional difficulties later in life.

Here are answers to 10 frequently asked questions about children’s friendships.

If you have further questions about your child’s friendships please organise an appointment with their teacher.

Have a great week.

Staff Professional Practice Days During the past 2 ½ weeks, all eligible teaching staff have completed what is known as a Professional Practice Day. The Professional Practice Day (or PPD) was funded by the Department of Education and Training to free eligible staff from face-to-face teaching duties and allows them to focus on planning, preparation, assessment of student learning, collaboration, curriculum development, relevant professional development and peer observation including feedback and reflection. These have been in place for a number of years. In 2023, eligible teaching staff will be entitled to one Professional Practice Day in Semester 1 and one other in Semester 2.

Hats After the recent wet and cloudy days, it is hard to believe that next week there will be a lot of sunshine and a return to some warmer weather. This is a reminder that our school’s Sunsmart Policy (found here with all other school policies http://www.viewbankps.vic.edu.au/forms-policies) requires all students to be wearing a named broad brimmed hat (not caps) outside at recess and lunch. We have a number of students who have been spending their recesses and lunch times under the shaded area near the Year 2 playground.

Have a great week!

Patrick

LATE ARRIVALS Please ensure children who arrive late go straight to the office to be marked as present. If the child does not come to the office for a late pass a text message will be sent to the parent/carer notifying that the child is absent. Late arrivals can only be time stamped at the office. When Parents/carers record the late arrival in Compass it provides us with the explanation but does not mark your child as present. When your child presents at the office, staff will record your child’s actual arrival time which updates the class roll.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK (WWCC) A ‘Working with Children Check’ is just one part of creating and maintaining a child-safe environment. It is a requirement that all parents/careers who wish to volunteer or participate in school activities have a current WWCC. https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/
