Note from our Head

Dear Oakfield families,

This week saw the start of Chinese New Year and I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy Year of the Tiger. The tiger is often associated with the qualities of bravery and fearlessness which are characteristics we place under the umbrella of one of our 6 Cs; courage.

I want to pay tribute this week to the courage of our Year 6s who have given their all in assessments and interviews for 11+. As well as this they have been absolutely fantastic ambassadors for our school on Open Mornings. On Thursday's Open Morning they conducted tours, gave speeches and performed music for families interested in joining our Oakfield community and we had fantastic feedback about the children from these prospective parents.

We are now delighted to announce that there is an opportunity for all our Pre-Prep families to meet the Year 6s and the wider Prep school at our 'Meet the Prep' event on Tuesday 1st March. It will take place after drop-off so we invite all Pre-Prep families to come along to the red gate on the Prep side of the road once they have dropped off their children. See the poster below for more details of what promises to be an exciting event and we cannot wait to welcome you and show you the world of opportunity available throughout our wonderful school.

Have lovely weekends everyone,

Moyra Thompson

BIRTHDAY BROADCAST

Parents Online Safety Session - 8th Feb

Join us via Zoom to find out how to keep your children safer online and ask our resident expert Mr Roye any questions you have!

Y6 and Y2 and Y3 Peer Teaching

There was some incredibly supportive English teaching from our Year 6s to pupils in Years 2 and 3. They showed great dedication and expertise as they explained different concepts to the younger children and set them tasks to test their understanding but helped them along the way!

Y5 and Y6 TRIP

On Tuesday Year 5 and 6 went to the BFI IMAX for a workshop in Spanish. We watched some short films and practised their Spanish skills. Their behaviour out in London was brilliant, well done!

SPORT

ISA Schools National HOCKEY Runners-Up!

Congratulations to our hockey heroes. What a result!!!

Netball

On Monday Year 3 played in some fun coaching matches against Alleyn's. Thank you to all of the parents that came to support!

Year 6 enjoying a rugby fixture with Rosemead Prep last Friday.

It is ALWAYS WONDERFUL to hear about sport going on outside of School:

A SUPER individual performance from Rory F-C who was awarded two trophies this week whilst playing football for his club; Player of the Football Tournament and Golden Boot for most goals scored!

YEAR 6

ART

Year 6 has been exploring the work of Henry Moore this half term.

They began by looking at Moore's shelter drawings, in connection with their Humanities project on World War 2. They were struck by the figures in the drawings and their similarity in form to the sculptures he later created. Thus inspired, we decided to have a go ourselves.

Firstly, the children sketched figures, thinking about the need to make the sculptures interesting but stable enough to stand unsupported. We made the decision that reclining figures would give us a larger surface area and therefore remain more stable.

The next step was to make a maquette using wire and plaster. A maquette is like a plan for a story, it helps us think in 3D by practising the shapes and poses. Once the planning was completed, it was time to embark on the final pieces; the clay sculptures. Clay and plaster are very different materials and required very different thinking; with plaster you need to build from the inside out (wire first, then foil to pad it out and finally the plaster to hold it all together); with the clay you need to mould from the outside, pinching out shapes and smoothing into position.

Our 6Cs have certainly been required in this project! We have a large collaborative sculpture planned for later in the term!

Moore talent than you can shake a stick at!

YEAR 2

Science – Conductors and Insulators

This week the year 2 children became scientific investigators. Their job was to research conductors and insulators. They had a completed circuit which they could connect to a range of materials such as card, felt, paper clips and more. The conductors allowed electricity to pass through lighting the bulb, while the insulators stopped the electricity from passing through, turning the bulb off.

Outdoor Play

Year 2 children were also excited to try the new resources which were ordered thanks to the school council. As the weather gets warmer the children love playing collaboratively outside. They thoroughly enjoy using the resources and have been learning how to look after them.

Religious Studies

YEAR 1

ENGLISH

This week, Year 1 were excited to sculpt towers using clay. They practised rolling and cutting the clay into the shape they needed, and then carving detail into the clay using tools.

They were also lucky enough to take part in the Chinese New Year Dance workshop.

UPPER FOUNDATION

Transport

What a wonderful morning we had with Sylvia who drives the underground trains on the yellow (Circle) and pink (Hammersmith & City) line.

We learnt so many interesting things! Did you know:

  • a train driver has 21 roundel (logos) on their uniform.
  • a train driver must carry 7 important items in their bag when working. A torch, their J key, a radio, a notepad, a weekly updated guide, their timetable and a hi vis jacket.
  • the crushed stones are called track ballast and they help keep the train tracks in place.

The children loved the experiment and looking at all the items.

The children listened well and asked some fantastic questions!

Choo Choo!!

CHINESE NEW YEAR

The children have been learning about the Chinese language, food, symbols and culture to coincide with Chinese New Year. They have loved learning about the ways of this vast and distant land!

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

Teamwork makes dream work! LEGO Club have been building LEGO houses this week, Year 1 and Upper Foundation children worked collaboratively! Great efforts from all!
