The People's Choice Awards showcases connections between faculty members and students By Josephine Velo

Famous actors may have the Oscars, but Loy Norrix students have The People’s Choice Awards.

On May 23 in the Kasdorf Auditorium, teachers and faculty members chose students that they have a bond with and who they feel deserve to be honored, awarding them a people’s choice award.

“I was not expecting this,” said senior Tishawn Wilson. “It feels amazing to be nominated.

Award winners enter the ceremony on a red carpet outside the auditorium. Family and friends watched and took photos on the sidelines.

Before the ceremony, students predicted which teacher nominated them.

“I’m kind of nervous because I don’t know who it is,” junior Isabella Figueroa explained. “I think it’s Senora Holmes because I always talk to her after class.”

Once student prediction videos had been played on the screen, each faculty member went up and gave a quick speech about the student they nominated and presented them with the award.

Social studies teacher Sean Bergan nominates a student every year.

“You get to choose someone who you enjoy and see great growth or potential from,” Bergan said.

Sequoya Morning enters the stage to sing at the ceremony.

There were three performances by students between the awards with Adrion Sadler playing piano masterfully and Sequoya Morning singing a song later on in the ceremony. The EFA dancers also performed multiple dances to wrap up the night.

The award ceremony highlighted the benefits of making connections with the people you work with everyday.

“Making connections with teachers makes it so much better to learn and makes it more fun,” said senior James Rocco who was awarded by basketball coach Detavia Moore. “You learn so much more when you feel like you’re friends.”
