Broadcasting the Joy of Reading in Ghana

With the help of young readers, a radio program in Ghana is amplifying the joy of reading throughout their community.

Worldreader and Class FM kicked off the Read to Inspire Program in November 2021.

Every week since, children from local schools are invited to the studio to record the radio show live on the air.

The program’s host, William Du Bois, selects a weekly book from the BookSmart app.

Each show starts with a reading session, followed by a panel for the children to discuss their thoughts and feelings about the story.

During the second half of the broadcast, conversations take place with local writers who appear as guest speakers.

Through what feels like an on-air book club, children in the studio increase their reading comprehension, critical thinking, and empathy.

“I feel happy when I read. I feel like all my dreams can come true.” - Matilda Nana Amina Quarshie, Read to Inspire participant

Parents, teachers, and students have all benefited from the Read to Inspire Program.

The young readers continue exploring the BookSmart app at home, with many of them reporting doing better in school – and finding more joy in reading.

“I have seen students who struggle to read on air or read well improve by week and their improvement trickles down to other new members who also struggle. It’s a blessing to be a part of these children’s success stories.” - William Du Bois, Read to Inspire host

In June 2022, the second season of the radio show launched, which will allow children to continue to listen and learn.

The Read to Inspire program is putting reading on a platform like never before, and the positive impacts continue to ripple throughout the community.
