CCY CONNECT JUNE 2022 EDITION

“We hold these truths to be self-evident.” These infamous words describe a time and culture where certain truths were obvious and did not need to be explained. People saw some truths as so ingrained in nature, society, and God that they simply didn’t need debate. Our culture has changed. We now live in a time where relativism is all too common. For many “truth” is now whatever a person decides it is for him or herself.

We can no longer assume that someone we talk with shares the same basic world view we do. People no longer hold to self-evident truths. We may turn to a Bible passage when speaking with a neighbor, only to find out they don’t think the Bible is historically accurate. Sadly, we are likely to encounter those for who truth is only found in science, in the news, or on Facebook.

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. COLOSSIANS 2:8

Paul was familiar with worldviews which were founded outside of Christ. We are instructed here to stand firm to THE truth of the Gospel in the face of cultural deceptions. The last two words of this verse are powerful. A worldview built on Christ is the only way to truth and salvation. The hollow and deceptive philosophies we find in the culture around us at times make us not want to engage with society for fear of being accused of ignorance, intolerance, or worse. However, it remains imperative that we reach out to those around us. Our great commission is to go into the world, not retreat from it.

This may require some thoughtful reflection on an individual and their ideals in order to connect with them. I don’t have all the answers, no one does. However, God didn’t command us to sit still and wait, he commanded us to GO into all the nations. We must take action to reach those around us. As culture continues to turn from God, we must be a light to the darkness.

Living Out Our Faith Wherever the Road Takes Us

Ms. Tori Lambert

Flip flops are flopping, sunscreen is lathered and the baseball hat and sunglasses are calling our names. Summer is finally here! Relaxed summer schedules are the perfect opportunity to make long-lasting memories. It’s a chance to live out our faith wherever our adventures may take us. A huge component of living out what we believe is allowing the Scriptures to come alive in the midst of our journeys. Summer lends plenty of moments to immerse ourselves and our kids in the Word, just as their hands are immersed in the backyard mud puddles.

Here are a few family devotional ideas. Each one goes with a different family fun location for Summer fun. It’s not hard to incorporate the Bible into these experiences, it just takes a little planning. These ideas can also be adapted for different locations and adventures. And also adapted depending on the age and personal likes/dislikes of the kiddos. These suggestions include discussions, verses, songs, snacks, games and/or activities to do with your kids just for fun.

The Zoo

A showcase for God’s creativity.

  • Hunt for five of the most bizarre animal facts. Discuss God’s purpose in His specific design of each animal.
  • Try to find an animal for each letter of the alphabet. Make an A to Z book. Talk about Adam’s job to name the animals. What names would you have chosen?
  • Discuss Noah’s faith in building the ark. Sing the “Rise and Shine” song. Eat animal crackers.
  • Upon your return, make monkey bread or decorate cupcakes to look like animals.
  • Play a game of animal charades or animal races (hop like a kangaroo, slither like a snake, or walk like an elephant.)

The Beach

Another display of God’s handiwork.

  • Build a sandcastle near the tide, on the sand. Build another one on a rock on higher land.
  • Discuss the wise man and the foolish man. How does that apply to us? Sing “The Wise Man Built his House upon the Rock.”
  • Fill a small container with sand. How many granules would you estimate are in there?
  • Talk about Psalm 139:17-18, “How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand.”

The Backyard

  • Go cloud watching.
  • Read Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.” Replicate the clouds with a cotton ball art project.
  • Read "It Looked Like Spilt Milk", by Charles G. Shaw.
  • Plant a vegetable or flower garden. Take care of it daily. (Even dead plants are a great object lesson if things don’t work out!)
  • Read Mark 4:30-32, the Parable of the mustard seed.
  • Play games, have fun, and be silly. Jesus promises us life to the full. What does that mean?
  • Hunt for bugs. Find a caterpillar and a butterfly. Discuss 2 Corinthians 5:17.
  • At night, chase fireflies. Notice how they stand out in the darkness.
  • Play flashlight tag. Sing, “This Little Light of Mine.”
  • Search for constellations.

New class starting Wednesday, July 13th for 9 weeks, 6:30-8:00 pm.

New on "WINSday" … Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University. We will learn how to successfully take each step and see “What I need” to have financial peace.

These past 2 years have been crazy, first with Covid-19 and now with inflation. But God reminds us 365 times in the Bible “to fear not” and that He is always with us. He knows our struggles and He will guide us through this storm.

A couple of weeks ago, God put it on my heart to help facilitate this Dave Ramsey course. It’s been 5+ years since CCY did their last one and I’m excited and feel it’s the perfect time to do another class. Whether it’s your first time or your tenth time doing the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace class, I feel we can all benefit from it. So I would like to encourage everyone from high school to retirement age to join. The class will begin Wednesday, July 13th from 6:30-8:00 pm and will run for 9 weeks. This class will be led by Dave through a DVD followed by a discussion and question time. Dave lays a good foundation on how we should manage our money and not allow it to manage us.

If you would like there is a book you can order that follows the DVDs called “Complete guide to money” by Dave Ramsey. I highly recommend getting the book not only for the class but later as a reference and a tool as you continue your journey (but it’s not necessary).

I hope you can join us. If you can’t make the class we will have the DVDs available, through Kathy Rumbo, each week.
