Resources for new academics
We will be soon sending out invitations to book an introductory informal chat with a member of the eLearning Team, to discuss what we offer to support you with your teaching.

Cadmus: a new tool aiming to reduce academic malpractice
Cadmus is an add-in to Turnitin that supports staged, scaffolded assessment and aims to reduce academic malpractice (in essays or online exams). It works as a ‘wraparound’ to Turnitin, and facilitates the whole assessment cycle from assessment design through to release of grades and feedback, as well as providing insights into student engagement with an assignment over time.
A small number of units in Humanities are trialling Cadmus in 2022/23, including two in SoSS (Law). More information can be found on our Cadmus Hub.
Mentimeter: a tool for live polling and more
Mentimeter is an interactive presentation tool similar to TurningPoint, which allows live polling and more. The University has purchased a site licence for the academic year 2022-23.
- For full instructions on signing up to access the full featured licence, please visit this page
- Training videos are available on FSE's Teaching Academy site
Hypothes.is - the social annotation tool
We now have a hub on the eLearning Resources page where you can find information about Hypothes.is (a tool for social annotation in margins of online digital texts), which includes student feedback on their experiences with using the tool. Access the Hub here.
Using MS Bookings (Office 365)
Bookings is part of Microsoft's Office 365 suite, and can be used to allow students to book a meeting. Here is our new video guide on getting started with Bookings, including how to request access to the app from IT Support.
Accessibility in Online Teaching
A new online training course is now available. This self-paced course details the considerations for accessibility in online teaching. The course covers:
- An introduction to accessibility in online teaching
- How to use Blackboard Ally to enhance accessibility
- How to make materials more accessible
- How to make live lectures more accessible
Instructions on how to register are available via the Training Catalogue
Turnitin: paper deletion process
Turnitin have changed the process for permanent paper deletion requests from a manual email-based process to a new self-service process.
Requests for permanent paper deletions can now be made by Instructors directly from the Turnitin inbox. These are all instructor roles apart from Administrator and External Examiner.
Information and guidance on this new process is available on the eLearning Turnitin Hub
Further information on permanent paper deletion can also be found on Turnitin's own website
Remote production equipment
We still have some additional equipment available for loan, to support the production of high quality teaching materials. Some of these items such as web cams are very simple to use, some items, like the broadcast quality microphones and lights take more time to set up.
Note, the green screens are large and can only be collected in person, we are not able to ship them at this time. Stock is allocated based on availability at the time of the request, and no further items will be purchased, so act now if you like to borrow any equipment.
Please use this form to request the items you need and eLearning will help support you in their use.
New SoSS eLearning staff
We are pleased to welcome Lauren O'Donnell and Charlotte Warden to the SoSS eLearning Team.
Lauren is a Learning Technologist, covering for Rachel Willder who is currently on maternity leave until July. Lauren is providing support for Philosophy, Politics, and Social Anthropology.
Charlotte has joined us from AMBS as a Learning Designer. This is one of four new roles across the Faculty. As well as offering eLearning and Learning Design guidance the team are working alongside TLSE colleagues to provide Curriculum Design support for new programmes throughout the NPP1 & 2 approval stages and beyond.
