Academic Updates
From the Desk of Dr. Denise Warshany
iReady Fall Diagnostic Assessments
- Students completed the iReady assessment during the week of September 6th in both Reading (grades 6-8) and Math (grades 6-8 and Algebra courses).
- Departments are receiving data to analyze student performance and determine learning pathways and supports for all students. This data will be applied both in the regular classroom setting, as well as Enrichment and Response to Intervention (RTI) periods.
- Student test results are available to families through their English and Math teachers.
Promotion/Retention Policies
Although the school year is young, we want to establish clear expectations as it relates to promotion and retention policies for our students.
Grades 6-8
- Per RCCSD Administrative Memo 7011.7, Cab middle school students must pass 50% of their instructional program each year (excluding physical education) to be promoted to the next grade level. One of the subject areas that must be passed is English Language Arts (ELA) or its equivalent.
- In addition, 50% of the passing grade must include ELA and one other core subject (Math, Science, or Social Studies).
- Note that students can have no more than two failing grades in exploratory/elective courses (e.g., health, physical education).
Grades 9-12
- High school students must earn a minimum of 24 credits over the course of their high school academic career to graduate. Further, a student who fails to earn the required six credits (including ELA, Mathematics, and Social Studies) each year will be retained in grade until the necessary course work is successfully completed.
- Per RCCSD Administrative Memo 7011.8, Algebra I or an equivalent course will be the first high school mathematics course for which a student will receive credit. Further, students must earn four credits of math to graduate, and a math credit must be earned during their senior year.
- Refer to pgs. 6 and 18-19 in the RCCSD Course Catalog for more information about graduation requirements and suggested course sequencing.
Did You Know?
Red Clay students in grades 6-8 had the highest Smarter Balanced scores in New Castle County, and our SAT scores were top in the entire state! Congratulations to our Cabbies who scored among the highest in the district under an extremely challenging school year. Go, Cab!
Culture and Climate Updates
From the Desk of Dr. Dawn Downes
CalloWAY
- During the month of September, teachers in all grades are teaching lessons from The CalloWAY. This matrix outlines the school expectations for students in the areas of Respect, Responsibility, and Safety when students are in the school, classroom, during transitions, on technology, and when considering their mental health.
- The purpose of the matrix and the lessons are to teach students the positive behaviors that lead to a positive and productive school community.
- There are posters of the CalloWAY in all classrooms, and teachers and administrators reference the matrix when talking with students about their behavior and being a positive example at school.

Homecoming
- The Cab Calloway High School will celebrate Homecoming the week of October 10-13, 2022.
- There will be dress up theme days and hall decorating. The week will culminate on October 13th when our whole school community will gather in the theater to celebrate Cab Calloway being named National Blue Ribbon School.
- Following the celebration, high school students will go to the gym for the high school pep rally and middle school will stay in the theater for a special program on the legacy of Cab Calloway and the impact that our alumni are having on the arts world.
- High school students will return to Cab the evening of October 13th for a dance from 7:00-10:00 PM.
Back to School Night
- Parents and guardians are encouraged to join the faculty and staff of Cab Calloway at Back to School Night on September 29th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
- Parents will have the opportunity to rotate through their student’s schedule and meet their teachers. In addition, the School Counseling Office, Wellness Center, and library will be open.
- The PTSO will have Cabbywear for sale in the lobby. When parents arrive to open house, please report to your student’s homeroom to pick up their students’ schedule.
- Plan to arrive early so that you are able to find parking. If the lower lot is full, please proceed to the upper parking lot. Please do not park at the Jackson Inn or the Cannery Shopping Center.
- Refer to the below document to learn your student’s homeroom number.
Student Extracurricular Activities
- Clubs and after school activities will be starting up over the next two weeks. The current list of activities is at the link below. The administration will be working with club advisors to finalize meeting days and times, so check the list often as it will be updated daily as we receive confirmation from club advisors that the club will continue to meet this year and the schedule is created.
- If parents are not able to provide transportation home for students after and after school activity, we do have an after school activity bus that will pick up students at 4:30 PM and take them to hub stops throughout the district. If your student needs to ride the activity bus, review the bus stops at this link. They will not be the same bus stop your child rides to and from school, and your child needs to know which activity stop they will use when they get on the bus at 4:30 PM.
- Additionally, the time that the student arrives at the hub stop depends on how many students are riding the bus and if any stops may be skipped.
Getting to School On Time
- At the grade level assemblies two weeks ago, the administrative team emphasized the importance of getting to classes on time. We are thrilled that most of our students are following the expectation. However, after looking at the data from the last week, an additional concern is students getting to school on time.
- All of our buses arrive to school on time, so if your student rides the bus, getting to their first class on time is probably not an issue. However, students who are car riders or drivers need to be aware that being late to school can result in a detention.
- This week we are giving student drivers and student car riders warnings and letting parents know that we are noticing a pattern. After this week, when students are late to school, it is an unexcused late. When a student has three unexcused lates to school or to their classes within a two week period, they will be assigned an after school detention.
The School Counseling Department post important information regarding volunteering, scholarships, and College Visits. See the below link for information sent in September.
