Welcome Dr. Dawn Downes

Welcome Dr. Dawn Downes as our new Assistant Dean of Culture and Climate
  • We look forward to having Dr. Dawn Downes join our Cab Calloway Community.
  • We are excited to have Dr. Downes join us a few days starting this Friday as part of the transition from her current role as the Student Advisor at Stanton Middle School.
  • Dr. Downes will officially start on April 4th, 2022.

Covid-19 Updates and Reminders

Daily COVID-19 Health Screening

  • Remember students are still required to perform the Daily Self Screener:
  • Follow the below Covid-19 Process in the event of a positive case:

  • If your child is sick, keep them home.
  • Although the mask mandate has been lifted, we are still following the self- screener protocol.
  • If your child has any covid like symptoms, they are required to have either a negative covid test result (home test kit results cannot be accepted) or a Dr.'s note of clearance prior to their return to campus. Tests results can be accepted from labs/medical facilities/physician offices.
  • Upon your child's return to campus, have them provide Mrs. Deebel or Nurse Whaler their negative covid test result or Dr.'s note of clearance to return -FIRST THING IN THE AM.
  • When writing a note due to absence for an illness, please be specific. Otherwise, we will need to call you or call your child out of class to obtain clarification to ensure the safety of all students and staff.

Cab Support Team: Community Resources

  • The Cab Support Team, which is comprised of admin and support staff including school counselors, nurse, interventionist, special education coordinator, and the school psychologist, is working to increase building wide supports for our school community.
  • These supports include a mindfulness Schoology page, mindfulness lessons by counselors, and various school clubs targeting student mental health.
  • The group is partnering with various outside agencies and supports to bring regular support internally (such as regular therapy dog visits in the building – stay tuned for details!) as well as future field trips and speakers to provide instruction and resources to both students and families related to lowering mental health stigma, building resiliency, and improving social/emotional functioning.

NAMI: Stigma Starts with You

  • We had another speakers series presentation from NAMI presenter on the topic of eliminating the stigma of mental health.
  • The below link will provide an overview of the presentation, along with a video.

April 13th: Middle School Resiliency Training

  • In our effort to continue to build supports for our middle school students, the Cab Support Team has planned an off campus resiliency training with the National Army Guard.
  • This event happens to fall on the same date for PSAT testing for our High School students.
  • This will be an amazing experience for our students, but requires your permission.
  • Please read the attached permission slip that will be sent home.
Shout Out to our Custodial Staff

Parking Passes and Driving Privileges:

  • It has been brought to the administrations attention that car riders have been parking in the top lot without parking passes.
  • We have received several complaints from our neighbors for parking illegally along side of N. DUPONT road and the Cannery
  • Any car without a parking pass will be endanger of being towed.
  • These spots are assigned to students earlier this year who paid for their parking pass.
  • If your student is driving a different vehicle, please have your student share with the front office.
  • New Castle Police will be issuing tickets for students who park illegally on N. DuPont Rd.
  • A meeting with Senator Sturgeons office, Wilmington Police, Building Administration, and District Operations to discuss parking, safety (U-Turns), speeding, and traffic flow with our neighboring Stores.

School Wide Expectation Assemblies

There has been a 6-11th Grade Assemblies in review of the following community expectations. Parents and students, we are enforcing the code of conduct to address the following areas:

  • Use of Electronic Devices
  • Lateness/Cutting Class
  • Review of Bullying Policy
  • Drug and Alcohol
  • Unexcused Tardies to School
  • Disruption of the Educational Process
  • Review of Cab Calloway School of the Arts Legacy.
  • The above topics were addressed but each student is responsible to adhere to the Student Code of Conduct.
Cab Ambassador’s attend Highlands Community Outreach

Cab Calloway Student Ambassador’s:

  • Calling all rising 2022-23 Juniors, and Seniors.
  • Do you have a passion to work with Elementary School students?
  • Would like to share your Cab journey to inspire others to pursue their passion in arts?
  • We are planning our 2022-23 Cab Calloway School of the Arts community outreach and looking for passionate students who want to visit elementary schools throughout the year to empower, inspire, and support rising artist in their pursuit to become a member of Cab Calloway.

After-School Activities: Activity Coordinators

On Monday March 28, 2022 we will have four activity coordinators assigned throughout the week in support of supervising extracurricular activities after school. The following roles and responsibilities will include:

  • Collecting Attendance Data by 2:40 PM
  • Monitoring Student Transitions After School.
  • Document when students leave campus with intent to communicate with parents.
  • The below QR code will be used to keep account of students leaving campus without permission.
  • Please note: Cab Calloway is a closed campus.
  • Students are recommended to bring snacks or plan to purchase items from the Snack Shack or Vending Machines.

Community Reminders:

  1. All students must have a hall pass to go to any assigned area.
  2. After School: Students who are assigned to after-school activities must report to their assigned area by 2:30 PM.
  3. Any student found on campus without an assigned location will be subject to consequences outlined in the Code of Conduct.
  4. Parents, we do not provide after-care here in the school. Students being picked up after school must be picked up by 3:00 PM.
  5. Students being picked up from after school activities must be picked up by 4:30 PM or immediately after the end of the activity.
  6. No student is permitted to open the door for any student once the doors are closed. Students found opening doors for other students will be subject to consequences.

Cab Calloway Excellence

PTSO Volunteer:

  • We are requesting volunteers to help with our PTSO sponsored Snack Shack.
  • The store is opened M-F from 2:40-3:30 PM to offer students a viable option to obtain food after school hours.
  • The Snack Shack eliminates the need to leave campus to go to neighboring stores.
  • NHS students can receive payment for working the store. If you are interested email Caitlin.kelly@redclay.k12.de.us

AP Research: Vilina Akala

  • We are excited to shared the work that Vilina was able to accomplish through her AP Research.
  • Read the below newsletter that highlights Vilina’s work with Forest Oak Elementary Students.

Amelia Moss

  • Amelia and family performed at the Queens this past month.
  • The event serves as an annual fundraiser for arts education and this was the 10 year anniversary.
  • She is the first "young" performer in SAL history.

All School Show: Art Exhibition

  • This Friday, March 25th, we will be having our all school art show in the Cab gallery from 5-7pm.
  • All students who are enrolled in an art class will be represented!
  • This event is free to attend, and all are welcome! Students who sign in that evening will receive extra credit for their support of our art program! We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Maia Palmer: 2022 Delaware State Employee Art Exhibition Awards

  • For the 2022 Delaware State Employee Art Exhibition, Maia was awarded the Special Award, Portraiture, and freshman Chase Puszkarczuk won the People's Choice Award!

BPA Cab Calloway Chapter

In February, the Cab Calloway Business Professionals of America Chapter competed in the 2022 Delaware BPA State Leadership Conference; on Monday, there was an awards ceremony and several Cab Calloway BPA Students received state honors.

The Cab Calloway BPA state conference results as follows:

  • Adharsh Henry, Xiaomiao Hu, Aarnav Reddy, Leo Yan placed 1st in Digital Game Design Team event.
  • Beibhinn Brady, Allison Hong, Abner Murillo Gonzalez, Mariel Schweiger placed 1st in Web Site Design Team event.
  • Alek Lee placed 1st in Financial Literacy and Business Math.
  • Annie Li placed 1st in Digital Citizenship and placed 3rd in Graphic Design Promotion.
  • Anna Winnington placed 1st in Business Communication and placed 3rd in Business Fundamentals.
  • Harshini Kannan placed 1st in Computer Literacy and placed 5th in Business Fundamentals.
  • Samradhni Pande placed 2nd in Entrepreneurship Exploration.
  • Emma Li placed 2nd in Human Resource Exploration.
  • Niranjana Sendil Kumar placed 3rd in Computer Literacy.
  • Abner Murillo Gonzalez placed 4th in Spreadsheet Applications.
  • All 15 students will be attending the BPA National Leadership Conference in May.
  • We thank Mr. Sverrir Georgsson for his commitment to excellence.

Mamma Mia Recap

  • We would like to thank all of the students, staff, parent volunteers, and community members for an amazing performances,
  • We were grateful to have the chance to double cast this performance and have such an exuberant experience during each performance.
  • It is also with mentioning that Mamma Mia sold more over 640 tickets for Sunday performances.
Save the Date: June 3, 2022
  • Seniors last day is May 27, 2022.
  • Please save the date for the Class of 2022 Graduation on June 3, 2022.
  • Graduation is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Cab Calloway in the theatre.
  • Middle School Moving Up Ceremony is scheduled for June 8, 2022. Start time TBD.
