Letter from the Global Forum Director
“It was with great honor and enthusiasm that I assumed the leadership of the 2023 PRME Global Forum in New York. I firmly believe in the transformative power of education, and I am deeply committed to inspiring a more human-centered approach to leadership worldwide, particularly in the fields of climate change, planet regeneration and the digital world.
Throughout the years, I have witnessed the immense impact that business education can have on individuals and society as a whole. However, I have also recognized the need for a paradigm shift in how we approach leadership in the business world. Too often, leaders are solely focused on profit margins, shareholder returns, and market dominance, neglecting the fundamental human values that underpin sustainable success.
At the 2023 Global Forum, we aimed to spearhead a movement towards a more human leadership approach that places a greater emphasis on human values and social responsibility. I firmly believe that this shift in mindset is not only necessary for the well-being of individuals and organizations, but also for the long-term viability of our global community.
Working collaboratively with leading academic institutions, thought leaders, and experts was at the basis of the 2023 Global Forum’s mission to design a program focused on responsible management education and leadership transformation, engaging keynote speeches, panel discussions, and interactive workshops, by sharing their stories and insights, to inspire current and future leaders to adopt a more holistic approach to business, while generating social impact.
Also, by recognizing the importance of diverse perspectives while promoting inclusivity, we encouraged the participation from individuals of different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences that definitely enriched the dialogue and ensured that no voice goes unheard. A platform for fostering collaborative networks and facilitating meaningful connections and knowledge exchange, to create a supportive ecosystem that nurtures and amplifies the impact of human-centered leadership initiatives.
For sure a remarkable opportunity to drive positive change in the world of business education and leadership and an unforgettable forum that will catalyze a global movement towards a more human-centered and sustainable future, nurturing a new generation of leaders who possess not only the necessary business acumen but also the empathy and ethical values required to navigate complex global challenges. “
SILVIA RODRIGUEZ
Director of the 2023 PRME Global Forum
Executive Summary
Our life is undergoing a profound transformation. The Earth’s ecosystems are increasingly overwhelmed, geopolitical instability is rising, and technology is disrupting our daily lives at an ever-increasing pace. Global business is also changing–with an increasing need for leaders to be bold, thoughtful and innovative while rising to the challenges at hand and making businesses a vehicle for solving environmental and social challenges.
We all know that it is through education that we prepare the next generation of leaders for life, future generators of sustainable value for business and informed decision makers, underscoring the critical role of education, particularly business schools, and promoting collaboration among various stakeholders to emphasize the importance of driving positive societal change and creating a sustainable future for all.
PRME launched for the first time this year the Responsible Management Education Week, hosted by Fordham University's Gabelli School of Business, in New York City from June 12th to June 16th, 2023, that encompassed various discussions, talks, workshops, and social gatherings to provide educational players with the skills and inspiration needed to address important global concerns with the aim to transform the business education landscape. The event connected over a thousand participants from 75 countries, both in-person and online, to foster a joint commitment to balance economic and sustainability goals in education.
Besides taking stock of PRME's growth and future ambitions, the event also featured:
- The launch of The Impactful Five (i5), a three-year program sponsored by the Lego Foundation that focuses on sustainable development in responsible management education
- The 2023 PRME Global Forum, the annual flagship event of PRME, over two days explored topics such as pedagogy, climate change, digital transformation and fluency, and humanistic leadership, bringing together business school leaders, faculty, students, business leaders, research center experts and sustainable development organizations to advance responsible management education's impact on a global scale. Additionally, parallel sessions and workshops took place during the 2023 Global Forum addressing complementary topics such as inclusivity in the classroom, climate education, indigenous wisdom, market simulations, and accountable leadership.
- Several partner events on humanistic management and leadership, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards in business school research and education, as well as the importance of systemic change for sustainability and the role of business schools in applying systems thinking to address sustainability challenges.
About the Global Forum
The Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) Global Forum originated in 2008 as an event intended to bring together all of PRME’s stakeholders: students, faculty, deans, board members, and others, in discussion about the latest innovations and challenges in responsible management education.
