EVENTS AND EXPERIENCES
Underground Dreamworld
Weirdly wonderful, an underground world of limestone caves lies below the native forest and farmland of the Waitomo region in the Waikato.
The name comes from the Māori words ‘wai’ (water) and ‘tomo’ (hole or shaft). There are some 300 known caves in the area. Their dramatic formations of limestone stalactites, stalagmites and columns are threaded through with the twinkling lights of New Zealand’s native glowworm, the arachnocampa luminosa, which glow to attract food and a mate, giving the caves their spectacular starry ceilings.
The Waitomo’s subterranean world is a magical one and accessible to all visitors – from young children to the elderly – thanks to a range of tours available in a number of the different caves in this remarkable region.
Middle-earth Movie Magic
If the Shire is at the heart of Middle-earth, then the Waikato is at the heart of the Shire. When scouting around for settings for his epic three movie adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Kiwi director Peter Jackson found just what he was looking for in the green rolling paddocks, rugged limestone outcrops and underground caverns of the Waikato region.
Gallagher Chiefs Home Game
The Chiefs Rugby Club was founded in 1996 as the Waikato Chiefs for the inaugural Super 12 season. The Chiefs are one of five New Zealand professional rugby union sides who play in the Super Rugby competition. Based in Hamilton, New Zealand, the Chiefs primary home ground is FMG Stadium Waikato. The Chiefs play in a unique jersey with black, red and yellow colours a visual representation of the Chiefs Country region.

WHAKATAUKĪ WISDOM
Māori proverbs and sayings called ‘whakataukī’, ‘whakatauākī’ or ‘pepeha’ play a large role within Māori culture. Whakataukī are an important feature of formal speechmaking (whaikōrero) but can also be used in everyday conversation. Whakataukī embody the values, wisdom, wit, and common-sense of tangata whenua (people of the land). They are usually short and concise - using symbolism and metaphor to convey key messages.
