Campbell Law Connections program provides mentors, mentees valuable lessons

The Campbell Law Connections mentor program wrapped up another successful year of partnering current students with practicing legal professionals this month with an event at Vidrio, said Assistant Dean of External Relations Megan Sherron ’10, who directs the Connections program. Since 2013, Campbell Law Connections, which is a joint endeavor between the law school and the Wake County Bar Association, has worked with alumni to help provide students valuable learning opportunities and experiences. “Our goal is to help mentees develop meaningful professional relationships and a more thorough understanding of the responsibilities and ethics demanded by the practice of law under the tutelage of a mentor,” Sherron explains. “Connections builds upon Campbell Law’s professionalism focus that permeates its core curriculum.” Find photos from the event at this link and learn more at this link.

Professor Bobbi Jo Boyd receives 2023 Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award

Professor Bobbi Jo Boyd is Campbell Law School’s recipient of the Dean’s Excellence Award for 2023, Dean J. Rich Leonard has announced. Professor Boyd joined the Campbell Law faculty as a tenure-track professor in 2009 and was granted full tenure in 2018. She teaches Criminal Law to first-year students and Professional Responsibility & Ethics to upper-level students – core doctrinal classes that every student who earns a Campbell Law degree must master. Professor Boyd also lends her personal and scholarly interests to critical upper-level electives, regularly teaching seminar courses on current topics in legal ethics and jurisprudence classes on theories of crime and punishment. Campbell Law celebrates class reunions for 1983, 1998, 2013 and 2018

More than 150 people including alumni and guests descended upon downtown Raleigh on Saturday, April 15 to celebrate their Campbell Law School class reunions. Members of the Classes of 1983, 1998, 2013 and 2018 celebrated their milestone anniversaries during a dinner held at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, located just a few blocks from the law school’s campus. The evening capped off a near yearlong fundraising and engagement effort undertaken by law school administrators and volunteer committees from each class. Attendees came from far and wide throughout the state of North Carolina as well as other areas of the United States including California, Florida, South Carolina and Texas. As part of the evening’s activities, the law school Dean J. Rich Leonard shared an update on all the exciting things taking place at the school including enrollment, competitive advocacy, job placements for students, bar passage success and more. “It was such a joy to see so many familiar faces and some new ones too.” said Leonard. “Tonight’s dinner includes multiple generations of Campbell alumni, some of whom earned their degree in Buies Creek, while others did so in Raleigh. Five Campbell Law alumni, professor named among 2023 ‘Leaders in the Law’

Five Campbell Law School alumni and a professor have been named among the N.C. Lawyers Weekly Class of 2023 “Leaders in the Law.” Kristen L. Beightol ’01, Ryan Bolick ’99, Kris Hilscher ’08, Darrin Jordan ’90, Scottie Forbes Lee ’14 and Professor Matt Sawchak are among the 24 winners of the annual award celebrating lawyers who set standards for other lawyers. Campbell Law advocates compete across the world thanks to sponsors Zaytoun Law Firm, Wyrick Robbins Yates & Ponton LLP, Hartsell & Williams PA

Campbell Law advocates competed in Texas, New York, Puerto Rico and Vienna, Austria, during the month of April! Two teams competed at the National Trial Competition (NTC) National Tournament from March 30-April 2 in San Antonio, Texas. Third-year law students Christian Allred, Megan Von Canon and Christopher Stock along with second-year students Sydney Kraft, William Sparks and Brandon Minella proudly represented the law school. Each team was invited to compete in the national competition after sweeping the Regional National Trial Competition in February hosted by Campbell Law in Raleigh. The team of Allred, Von Canon and Stock was sponsored by the Zaytoun Law Firm. They were proudly coached by Chamberlain Collier ’20. The Willem C. Vis team returned from Vienna, Austria, after a busy week of competing, networking and learning. There were a total of 374 teams in the Willem Vis competition this year, representing almost every country in the world. Nearly 50 of those teams were from the United States, including the Campbell Law team. The team and coaches would like to thank Hartsell & Williams PA for sponsoring the team. During the general rounds of the competition, team members Michael Civis ’24 and James Murray ’23 had the pleasure of arguing against the University of Belgrade from Serbia, the University of Montenegro, Doshisha University from Japan and the University of Geneva from Switzerland. Third-year students Tia Overway, Jacob Byrd and Mary Catherine Coltrane placed as quarterfinalists in the 38th annual Jerome Prince Memorial Competition from March 30-April 1 at Brooklyn Law School in Brooklyn, New York. The team was proudly coached by alumnae Jaime Williams ’15, who stated, “I commend the advocates for the exceptional time and effort that they put into this multifaceted moot court problem. They received consistent compliments for both their preparation and presentation.” Learn more at this link.

Third-year advocates Jernigan Newell, Riya Bhatt, Seth Gulledge and Christian Lunghi competed in the Estrella Trial Advocacy Competition in San Juan, Puerto Rico, over the weekend of April 15. The team was proudly coached by Daniel Nelson ‘21.

Betsy McCorkle ’26 wins TBJ Women in Business award

Betsy McCorkle ‘26 is among the winners of the Triangle Business Journal’s 2023 Women in Business Awards based on her leadership of Kairos Government Affairs in Raleigh and her accomplishments within the field of governmental affairs. The Women in Business Award has been awarded annually for the past 26 years by the Triangle Business Journal to “outstanding women leaders in the Triangle,” with strong, positive reputations in business and community service, and who have demonstrated leadership within their field through noteworthy accomplishments. The award winners were honored at a luncheon on March 23 at the Embassy Suites in Cary. McCorkle is the managing partner and co-founder of Kairos Government Affairs, a Raleigh company that provides expertise within the political realm. McCorkle has been working in this field for more than a decade, and she has honed her skills in governmental strategy and implementation. Learn more at this link.

Three Campbell Law students chosen for NCBA’s Minorities in the Profession summer program

Three rising second-year Campbell Law students — Sofía M. Gómez-Ayala, Iman Abebe and Lauryl Fright — have been selected to participate in the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) Minorities in the Profession (MIP) 1L Summer Associate Program. MIP is dedicated to promoting the increased presence of minorities, specifically those who identify as racial minorities, in the legal profession by providing a vehicle through which top law firms and corporate legal departments can connect and interview first-year minority law students across the state. Selected rising second-year law students participate in summer associate programs designed to provide students with hands-on experience in a variety of practice areas. Learn more at this link.

Campbell Law offers free Wills for Heroes with NCBF clinic on April 1

The latest installment of Wills for Heroes was conducted on at Campbell Law School on April 1. Volunteer attorneys drafted simple wills, health care power of attorney and financial power of attorney documents for first responders and their families, free of charge. Find more photos at this link and learn more at this link.

Campbell Law student to moderate National Sports Business & Legal Society Symposium panel

Hannah Ingalls ‘24 moderated a panel on “In-House Legal Roles in Sports” during the virtual National Sports Business & Legal Society Student-Moderated Spring Symposium on Wednesday, April 12. Ingalls co-moderated the panel with Alex Egan from University of Mississippi School of Law. Guest speakers included John Anderson, General Counsel of the U.S. Figure Skating; Laura Neary, General Counsel from Creative Artists Agency (CAA) Hockey; and Jametta White, President of Journey Sports Management. Brianne Gallo ‘25 chosen as HLSA’s Alondra Bribiesca Scholarship recipient

Campbell Law School’s Hispanic Law Student Association (HLSA) executive board members have chosen Brianne Gallo ’25 as the recipient of this year’s Alondra Bribiesca Scholarship. The summer scholarship is intended for “a student who has exemplified courage in the face of adversity,” a trait exemplified by the scholarship namesake, Alondra Bribiesca ‘20. Students who apply for the scholarship have to write an essay explaining what they can do to make Campbell Law a more inclusive place. Berkeley Judicial Institute program features Dean J. Rich Leonard’s new book

Dean J. Rich Leonard was recently invited by Berkeley Law School to speak about his new book, “From Welcome to Windhoek: A Judge’s Journey,” as part of the Berkeley Judicial Institute‘s B-CLE offerings. The Berkeley Judicial Institute (BJI)’s mission is to build bridges between judges and academics and to promote an ethical, resilient and independent judiciary, according to its website. Read more about its mission at this link. Enrollment in courses and CLE credits are complimentary within the B-CLE platform. A B-CLE account is required to enroll for courses. Subscribe here at no charge. There is “Recognition & Elimination of Bias” CLE credit available for Leonard’s program but the B-CLE is only certified to give credit for California.
