Dual Enrollment Tips for Success
Make Informed Decisions
Dual Enrollment classes are college classes and the amount of work necessary to succeed in Dual enrollment classes may be much greater than in high school classes.
Satisfactory completion of Dual Enrollment classes is critical to maintain future Scholarships and Financial Aid eligibility.
Dual Enrollment classes are a part of your permanent college transcript.
Grades earned while participating in the Dual Enrollment program are calculated into student’s permanent college GPA.
Poor performance as a Dual Enrollment student can ultimately impact one’s college career, including:
- Acceptance to a college or university.
- Academic standing.
- Financial Aid eligibility.
Understand the difference between dropping a class and withdrawing from the class.
Dropping classes can be done without penalty until the designated deadline each semester. Please review the Academic Calendar for specific dates.
Withdrawal may impact future Financial Aid and participation in the Dual Enrollment program.
Check with your High School Counselor and IRSC Advisor to discuss how these options may impact future classes.
Expectations and Responsibilities
Dual Enrollment students are held to the same standards as college students.
You must attend class during the first week.
Failure to attend class during the first week may result in being withdrawn from the class which may impact future Dual Enrollment participation and Financial Aid.
· Ask questions and talk to your instructor when you need help.
· Always utilize and refer to your course Syllabus to keep track of due dates.
Time Management is essential to success for college students. As a Dual Enrollment student it is important to manage your time wisely.
· It is your responsibility as a college student to complete assignments on time.
· Dual Enrollment Students should be prepared to work independently without reminders.

Advising Services
As a first-time in college degree-seeking student at IRSC you will be assigned an academic advisor. Your advisor’s location will be based upon the home campus you indicated on your application– Massey, Pruitt, Chastain, Mueller, or Dixon-Hendry. . To find out who your advisor is you can log in to your MyPioneerPortal, select Workday Student, select "Academics" and your advisor will be listed under your "Support Network".
What should you expect from your advisor?
As in any partnership, there are going to be expectations on both sides. These are some basic expectations you should have of your assigned advisor.
- Assistance with exploring degree programs.
- Graduation/Transfer Requirements.
____________________________________________________________________
What does your advisor expect of you?
As an IRSC student, your advisor will also have expectations of you. When you think about the characteristics and behaviors that help a student to be successful in college these are especially critical.
- Reflecting on your academic goals.
- Time management.
- Ask for help.
- Fulfill your potential, reach your goals, and become an IRSC graduate.
____________________________________________________________________
Advising Check-Ups for Success
These “Check-ups for Success” include:
1. A “Getting to Know You” session before or during your first semester
The first session with your assigned advisor will be an opportunity for you both to get to know each other and for your advisor to provide you with some basic information about the services and tools available.
This will also be the session when you begin a discussion about your academic goals. If you’ve decided upon a major it will be the session when your Academic Plan is reviewed or modified. If you haven’t decided upon a major, your advisor may refer you to Career Transition Services for more exploration.
2. A Check-up at the 25 – 50% benchmark toward degree
The second check-up should occur somewhere between the 25 – 50% benchmark toward degree and will be an opportunity for you to confirm degree goals and assess your progress so far.
3. A Check-up at the 50 – 75% benchmark toward degree
By the time you’re 50 – 75% finished with your program it will be time to once again check on your progress and start making some firm decisions if you’re planning to transfer to another institution. That may also be the time you decide to discuss the baccalaureate degree opportunities available here at IRSC.
4. A final Check-up as you approach graduation
Once you’re past the 75% benchmark it’s time to discuss graduation, commencement, and to finalize any transfer decisions you’re making.
While any and all of these conversations can take place throughout your enrollment this gives you an idea of a timeline to follow. When you meet with your advisor for the first time they will share this information with you in much greater detail.

Appointments with your Assigned Advisor
Your first step is to make an appointment with your advisor. While you’re enrolled at IRSC you’ll make an appointment when you need to do any of the following:
- Customize or update your Guided Pathway/Academic Plan
- Change your major
- Apply for academic reinstatement
- Checkpoint Advising
- Review your Degree or Certificate requirements
It’s important that when you have questions or if you’re experiencing a challenge and you’re not sure where to turn that you reach out to your advisor. Sometimes your questions may just require a quick email or phone call. But when you need to do any of the things listed above make an appointment with your assigned advisor so that they…and you…will have adequate time to make sure all your questions are answered.
Advisors at all of our campuses see students on both a walk-in and appointment basis but remember that you’ll always need an appointment for these five reasons.

Campus Safety and Reporting Obligations
Campus Crime Statistics Reporting
As a part of our continued commitment to make IRSC a safe place to learn and work we adhere to all state and federal reporting guidelines.
In compliance with the Jeanene Cleary Act IRSC publishes an annual report disclosing 3 years of crime statistics for the college. A public crime log is also made available and timely warnings regarding any incidents are promptly provided to the IRSC community.
Vulnerable Persons Reporting
Here at IRSC the safety and well-being of our students and guests is our top priority. We take a tough stance on the protection and reporting of incidents involving vulnerable persons. The Florida Protection of Vulnerable Persons Act requires immediate reporting if there is reasonable belief that a minor has been abused by an adult in any way or has been the victim of a juvenile sexual offender.
Please contact the Department of Children and Families (DCF) Abuse Hotline at 800-962-2873 or visit the Abuse Hotline website to report suspected incidents.
Questions regarding vulnerable persons reporting and procedures may be directed to the Director of Campus Security at 772-462-7860 or the Assistant Dean of Human Resources at 772-462-7282.
Campus SAVE Act (VAWA)
The Campus Sexual Violence Elimination (SAVE) Act, a provision of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was enacted to protect students against sexual violence and harassments on college campus.
IRSC has a "Zero Tolerance" policy against violence and harassment. We take preventative measures to protect our students by providing education and awareness of such incidents, setting strict disciplinary standards, and through transparency in crime reporting.
At IRSC our students are at the forefront of everything that we do. Our goal is to provide a safe learning environment where you, the student, are encouraged and challenged to meet your full potential.

.
IX Protection and Reporting
As a student at Indian River State College, it is important for you to be aware of your rights and protections. IRSC is committed to maintaining a fair and respectful environment for living, work, and study.
IRSC prohibits discrimination on the basis of: race, color, national origin, ethnicity, sex, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, pregnancy, veteran status, or genetic information.
This policy applies to all employees, students, prospective students, employment applicants, non-employee volunteers, guests, contractors, vendors and other IRSC affiliates.
More information about the non-discrimination/non-harassment policy can be found in the IRSC Student Handbook.
Should you experience or witness discrimination, harassment, or sexual assault incidents please report it immediately to the individuals listed. The Campus Presidents at each of branch campuses also serve as Deputy Title IX Coordinators and may provide assistance with such incidents.

Course Delivery Methods
In today’s ever-changing world flexibility is key. What works for one student may not necessarily be ideal for another. Keeping this in mind IRSC offers a robust course offering delivered in a variety of ways to ensure students have the opportunity to reach their educational and career goals. How will you be taking classes this semester?
Hybrid: In-person instruction coupled with online learning. A portion of your learning is in the classroom with your instructor and fellow students-in classes with sizes and safety precautions aligned with CDC guidelines-and the remainder is completed through online assignments.
Online Other Distance Modes: Students meet online with the instructors and class at designated dates and times, generally in Blackboard Collaborate. Lectures, discussions, and presentations take place at specific hours. All students must be online at the exact time in order to participate in the class.
Online Traditional: Traditional online course delivery provides an opportunity to learn and complete assignments on a more flexible schedule. While there are still due dates for assessments, classes are not confined to particular dates and times, and students typically have more flexibility to access materials, lectures, tests, and assignments.
