What is autism?

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 54 children in the United States today.

We know that there is not one autism but many subtypes, most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. The ways in which people with autism learn, think and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.

Several factors may influence the development of autism, and it is often accompanied by sensory sensitivities and medical issues such as gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, seizures or sleep disorders, as well as mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression and attention issues.

Indicators of autism usually appear by age 2 or 3. Some associated development delays can appear even earlier, and often, it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months. Research shows that early intervention leads to positive outcomes later in life for people with autism.

Graduation Announcement

as of 3-24-2022

Dear School of Social Work Students, Faculty, and Staff,

This update is sent on behalf of the Social Work Graduation Committee led by SWGSA and USWA.

Thank you everyone for your patience in regards to graduation announcements. The School of Social Work is invited to attend two ceremonies.

The first ceremony is the official one sponsored by SJSU (also called graduation or commencement). It is scheduled for Thursday, May 26th at 12:00 Noon. This ceremony will be with the other departments within our College of Health and Human Sciences.

The second ceremony (also called "convocation") focuses only on the School of Social Work (BASW and MSW graduates). This ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Sunday May 29th at 11:00 AM at SJSU's Event Center. This ceremony is the one that the Graduation Committee has been working on. The Graduation Committee is working on the other logistics with convocation (i.e. tickets, ADA accommodations, etc.) and will have an announcement shortly.

Please reach out to the Graduation Chair, Imani Savage via email at swgsa.graduationchair@gmail.com if you have any questions regarding convocation. You can also ask questions at the next Graduation Committee meeting on April 6th at 7:30 via zoom. Meeting ID: 821 3474 0787; password: spartans22

Everyone is welcome to attend both events. We expect that the Social Work graduating classes of 2020 and 2021 will also be included. More details will be sent when they become available.

Nancy Martin, BASW

"A lot has happened since graduating, right after graduation, I decided to take time off after experiencing a loss of a loved one. I bought a one way ticket to Mexico to allow myself to heal and grieve properly, I ended up living in Mexico for four months. When coming back to the states, I applied to social work positions one of them being where Im currently working! I have been a Social Worker at ALRP for a month now and I'm super happy with my job."

"A piece of advice I can give to students is to not get discouraged if you don't get your career job right away after graduation, there's a job out there for you, just be patient."

MSW Student Highlight

Jennifer Tai

(she/her/hers)

Second Year MSW, Full-time On-Campus Program / Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPSC)

"Hi everyone, my name is Jennifer Tai and Iā€™m a final year on-campus SJSU MSW/PPSC graduate student. This program has helped me with my life mission: supporting youth from underprivileged backgrounds, especially those from foster care along with improving mental health services for youth/young adults.

As a former foster youth myself, Iā€™m deeply passionate about this mission.

Iā€™d experienced challenges that impacted my mental health, such as being in foster care, the passing of my mother, my dadā€™s abuse, food/housing instability, along with surviving two abusive partners that led to my anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Itā€™s from these lived experiences that Iā€™m passionate about this mission. Throughout my undergraduate and graduate journey, Iā€™d dedicated myself to develop personally/professionally to achieve my goal. I've been in multiple leadership positions in community service organizations, interned at nonprofits, social services agencies, and schools, along with leading conferences and studying abroad. These experiences plus my B.A. in Communication Studies and Child & Adolescent Development and minor in Psychology along with my MSW will continue to support me with my mission. Iā€™m grateful for the opportunity to continue to learn from others within this field to best serve my communities."
