Olvera St.

Basket

Olvera Street was founded in 1930 by the woman named Christine Stirling. She had saved Olivera street back by bringing people together and have Mexican American merchants sell there. This brought life to Olvera Street and made it into the heart of Los Angeles!

While Olvera Street was popular there were still problems. An artist made a painting after being commissioned but decided to protest. His Painting was later white washed due to his ideas.

This is a photo of that mural today.
This is one of the many dancers that preformed during the practice

Every year Olvera Street holds many events but the one most people come for is during Dia de los Muertos. This event lasts 9 day, from October 25th - November 2nd. Dancers preform a ritual called Grupo Tartalejos and participants dressed as skeletons preform stories.

Statues placed in the plaza that show the birth of Jesus.

During December Olvera Street decorates its plaza with statues and trees!

In Olvera Street there are many museums, this is one of them. The Avila Adobe was built in 1818 and is one of the oldest buildings in Los Angeles. This museum is free to enter and shows how life was during that time.
