College Chronicle Issue 17, 2021

FRom the PRINCIPAL

Welcome to our final newsletter for 2021. We have reached the end of another wonderful year of learning. As the year draws to a close I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and assistance throughout the year. Thank you so much to our families for your amazing partnership this year. We are richly blessed to have such a wonderful group of parents who assist our College in so many ways and we really appreciate it.

Thanks to our students for the way they have committed to their learning this year. We know that that's the real reason our school exists, for the education of children and young people. Thank you to the kids for the way that they have been able to face the challenges this year.

I would like to thank the staff for their dedication and professionalism and acknowledge the contributions they have made over the past year. The leadership team, along with teachers, IT & administrative staff, maintenance & grounds staff have worked hard. A huge thank you to all of our staff. Join me in thanking them for their flexibility, diligence, for their steadfastness and for their faithfulness in doing things in a different way.

My prayer for each family over this Christmas and holiday season is that you can all enjoy quality time together and grow closer as a family. May you find time to reflect on the year that has been and the growth of each member of your family.

I wish you all God’s richest blessings at Christmas time, as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour. Have a safe and restful holiday break! I look forward to seeing you next year!

"Who can add to Christmas? The perfect motive is that God so loved the world. The perfect gift is that He gave His only Son. The only requirement is to believe in Him. The reward of faith is that you shall have everlasting life." Corrie Ten Boom

"The very purpose of Christ's coming into the world was that he might offer up his life as a sacrifice for the sins of men. He came to die. This is the heart of Christmas." Rev. Billy Graham

ARTS ALIGHT 2021

Creative ARts Extravaganza

The 2021 Arts Alight: Creative Arts Extravaganza was a wonderful celebration of students' creativity across both campuses and in so many subject areas. Lego Robotics, 3D Animation and Graphic Design and Information Technology, including a 3D printing display, showcased the students' technological skills. A huge display of wood and metal work was on show and it was exciting to have Aldinga campus' Design & Tech work showcased for the first time. The Primary, Middle and Senior Years Visual Art and Photography was excellent quality and with a great variety demonstrating the wonderful skills from ELC right through to our Year 12 graduating students. Home Economics, Child Studies and HASS had their largest displays ever with a highlight of unique cushion designs being a favourite exhibit.

Fashion Design from Year 10 to 12 was represented in displays and live fashion parades on the main stage. Our Fashion Design students and their garments were outstanding and we are so proud of them all. The Primary and Secondary dances were beautifully choreographed and added a wonderful element to our stage productions. The musical performances of the choirs, singing groups and soloists were a delight with really polished performances. A special mention to the Year 10 Drama crew for putting on a hilarious short skit as part of the the Secondary production and our Year 10 student comperes who were outstanding. One of the most popular areas this year was the busking stage where students performed non-stop over the evening to the delight of the crowd who gathered in that area.

The weather was kind and many families stayed behind to enjoy each others company outside and partake of food and drink from the onsite catering vans.

A huge thank you to all the students who made the night so very special. We love seeing you shine in all you do. To all the parents who were so patient in complying with the COVID management, line-ups and ticketing - a big thank you! Everything was so calm and peaceful despite the large crowds and change over times of sessions. What a wonderful community you are! To all the teachers and staff who helped students' create their work, took part of the preparation and running of the event, it was a team effort and everyone's role was so appreciated.

Rite Journey

The Rite Journey is a year long program undertaken by our Year 9 students that is designed to acknowledge & celebrate each student’s shift into adulthood; offer conversations & experiences to guide this transition; foster connections with positive adult role models; educate & include parents/carers in the process; connect students with their strengths & build self-awareness; and transform school culture by developing responsibility. The Rite Journey concluded with a special dinner on Monday 29 November. It was a great time to acknowledge the achievements and growth that the Rite Journey provided. Thank you to our Rite Journey teachers, Mrs Sherry James, Mr Peter Kalfas, Mrs Debbie Ellis and Mr Shane Rubie; and to our Rite Journey coordinator, Mr Craig Davidson.

The Rite Journey program this year was a unique experience. Mr Kalfas helped us to discover more about ourselves and what it takes to grow and to think and act like men. As a class we discussed aspects of the journey into adulthood and how to better ourselves; to prepare for those tough challenges that life will inevitably throw our way. Along with many group discussions, we underwent some very gruelling challenges, and in some instances, these pushed me to my limits. However, they would unlock in me a new sense of courage and bravery that I did not know existed. In the end, I loved how Rite Journey was a fun, relaxed subject. Noah, Year 9

Rite Journey has helped me grow into a better person. The conversations we’ve had have given me a chance to look deeper into important topics. The challenges pushed me to think outside the box and challenge me. The camp was the hardest challenge for me as it pushed the limits of my physical abilities. The 10/10 challenge forced me to think of creative ways that I could turn $10 into more. I feel like our group has gotten closer over the year as we have started to understand each other. I think my favourite part about the Rite Journey was meeting with my mentor, learning skills and having deep conversations. Overall, the Rite Journey has been an experience I will never forget. Bethany, Year 9

EnCouraging PASSIONATE LEARNing

In Term 4 we celebrated the presentations of six Passion Projects from students at both Morphett Vale and Aldinga.

Rubie-Faith in Year 2 at Aldinga followed her passion for gymnastics and researched the journeys that Olympic athletes take to get to the games. Her comparison of three athletes demonstrated similarities and differences in their journey and she concluded that those who train harder have more success.

Aubrey in Year 2 at Morphett Vale wanted to investigate how she could implement sustainable practices in her own home to reduce food scrap waste that goes into the green bin. Her mini research project involved collecting data on food waste, analysing it, and sorting the best solution for its disposable. Aubrey decided on purchasing an in-ground compost bin for her home using worms to help biodegrade its contents. From here, she collected more data on how the introduction of the compost bin helped reduce food waste in her household - her results were impressive, reducing waste from 2kg a week to 200g!

We love giving students an opportunity to explore their own personal interests and passions in Extended Learning and hope to inspire future learning where students are motivated, and self-directed learners.
