ND Loyal Roll Call
John Gugle '92
I am John Gugle (pronounced GOOGLE), and contrary to public opinion, I did not create the Google search engine. I am the father of four children - Sarah (21), Ryan (18), Andrew (18), and Ashley (17). I have spent my career in Financial Services helping others grow their wealth and manage their financial affairs.
My connection to Notre Dame is very sacred to me. I attend almost every Notre Dame event I can and I love sharing time with others who are just as passionate about what Notre Dame stands for. I plan on asking my girlfriend Tracy to marry me and we have plans to marry at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in 2024. Ultimately, I want to work at Notre Dame in Development raising money to further the Notre Dame mission.
Dorm: I lived in Flanner Hall my freshman year, but after studying abroad in Tokyo Japan for my sophomore year, my ND buddies who studied with me in Tokyo pulled me into Stanford Hall. I lived in Stanford Hall both my junior and senior years.
Major: Double major Finance & Japanese
Hometown: Columbus OH
Current location: Charlotte NC since 2002
What do you enjoy the most about being an ND Loyal Volunteer? The opportunity to give back to Notre Dame is of primary importance to me, but I really enjoy re-engaging with old friends about how we all can make Notre Dame special for future generations. ND Loyal gives me a platform to share my passion for Notre Dame with others who may have lost their connection to the University. My ND roommates have called me the glue in relationships. I maintain relationships for a long time.
Favorite ND memory? Meeting then-Vice President George H.W. Bush when he came to Notre Dame to campaign for President. I was so nervous about meeting the VP that I told him "It is an honor to meet you, Mr. President". He remarked, "Not President yet, six more days" sounding exactly like Dana Carvey. President Bush later gave the commencement address at our graduation.
Fun fact about yourself? I lived and worked in Tokyo Japan for 8 years early in my career. I love the Japanese culture and the country. It is my second home.
Favorite fundraising or engagement tactic? I like to make phone calls to the folks on my ND Loyal list. My pitch to them goes, "My connection to Notre Dame has been one of the greatest joys of my life. Wherever I have gone in this world, I have always found Domers who share my passion for the University. It is a common bond rooted in love and respect for what Notre Dame stands for and what a Notre Dame education has meant to all of us." That is usually enough for them to engage further and ask more about my ties to Notre Dame. My enthusiasm shines through and many of them have been connected to me on social media, so they have seen countless pictures of me at ND football games, at reunions, and at local ND Club events, etc. From there I just need to continue my messaging of why giving back to Notre Dame is so important.
