The devastating impact of TB
TB is a preventable, treatable, and curable disease, yet continues to cause devastation the world over. In 2020, at least 1.5 million people died from TB, including 200,000 children, and almost 10 million people fell ill with the disease. Even in the face of COVID-19, TB remained the leading infectious cause of death in much of the world.
Invest in TB vaccines to save millions of lives!
We have seen unprecedented development of multiple COVID-19 vaccines in the last 18 months, but there is only one available TB vaccine โ the century old Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG). BCG is ineffective in adults and is not completely effective against the most severe forms of TB, such as TB meningitis, in children.
New TB vaccines are on the horizon, but their success is not guaranteed. World leaders pledged to deliver at least USD $2 billion annually for TB research, including vaccines, at the 2018 United Nations High-Level Meeting (UNHLM) to End TB. Despite these commitments, TB research is impeded by an annual US$1.1 billion shortfall, while funding for TB vaccines has never exceeded US$120 million per year. These commitments cannot be in vain. We need to make up for lost time.
An Open Letter to G20 Health & Finance Ministers
The TB Vaccine Advocacy Roadmap (TB Vax ARM) represents a global coalition of TB stakeholders, including TB survivors, civil society organizations, and scientific non-profits, invested in TB vaccine advocacy and research. We have come together to deliver an open letter the G20 Health and Finance Ministers, signed by TB survivors and over 50 organisations around the world, with a call for them to fulfil their commitments to fund TB vaccine research. Learn more about how to get involved in TB vaccine advocacy at www.newtbvaccines.org/take-action.
We call upon our leaders to uphold global commitments to End TB by 2030 by ensuring an annual investment of US$1 billion to deliver a fully funded and financed TB vaccine pipeline by 2023 to make new TB vaccines possible as early as 2025.
