Superintendent's Summary DR. JACK PARKER ~ 4.28.23

During the April 17 Board Meeting, a revised calendar for the 2023-2024 school year was approved to include an early release of two hours on Monday, April 8, 2024. This change was made to provide an optimal opportunity for students to view the eclipse which would have occurred during regular dismissal and afternoon drive times. Wednesday, April 10, 2024 will be a normal release day with no early Wednesday release. The first student day for the 2023-2024 school year will be Friday, August 4.

Also, at the same board meeting, the 2024-2025 academic calendar was approved. Both calendars feature a one-week fall break and a summer that is approximately one week longer than in years past. MVCSC staff and parents voted last year and the one-week fall break with a later school start date in August was the chosen winner. Click HERE for a link to all three of our academic calendars.

Congrats 2022-2023 MV Ambassadors Graduates! The Application to be a 2023-2024 Ambassador is Open Now!

This special group of community members learn behind-the-scenes information about MVCSC and are empowered with knowledge about school operations, student opportunities and each administrative department. In this photo, our Ambassadors watched our MVHS Gold Intensity Dance Team showcase their state champion pom performance. As we extend our gratitude to our wonderful Ambassadors this year, we are so excited to welcome a group of new faces in the community for the 2023-2024 school year.

This year, the Ambassadors had seven meetings on Tuesday mornings. They went on student-led tours of several Mt. Vernon schools and facilities, spoke to various staff and administration, heard from students on a student panel who spoke about their daily activities in school and also enjoyed student performances. All of these experiences gave our Ambassadors insight into how the school operates and the abundance of ways that students learn at Mt. Vernon. Not only do Ambassadors experience how wonderful our staff and students are, they also were astonished when they learned about the efforts and responsibilities of each administrative department and how they support student learning.

One of this year’s graduates, Courtney Nix, shared, “The MV Ambassadors program is a great way for the community members to get a behind-the-scenes education of what takes place in the schools that our children attend for the first stage of their lives. They do a great job of showing the ‘who, what, when, why and how’ of things as a corporation whole. And it helped me understand more of why things are done the way they are done and I am even more confident in my decision to move my family to this school district for the best education my children can have.”

If any of this program sounds appealing to you and you are able to attend eight meetings on Tuesday mornings, then we encourage you to apply now! For more information and the application, please visit mvcsc.k12.in.us/Ambassadors.

Congrats to our 2022-2023 Teacher & Staff of the Year!

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is proud to share this year’s district winners of Teacher of the Year (TOY) Mrs. Karen Riesterer, Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher at Mt. Vernon High School, and Staff of the Year (SOY) Mrs. Wendy Mayo, Instructional Assistant at Mt. Comfort Elementary. Both winners were recognized at the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation’s Black and Gold Gala in early April.

Karen Riesterer, who has been with Mt. Vernon Schools for 18 years, says, “I enjoy the day-to-day interaction with students and staff. It is a wonderful moment in teaching when students apply what they have learned in the classroom to their life. Those "ah-ha" moments are the best! It is such an honor to be nominated by your colleagues and then to be named Teacher of Year is a next level of excitement!”

Wendy Mayo, on the other hand, is only in her first year at Mt. Vernon. She shares, “I was shocked! I have been in this position for such a short time and it was hard to wrap my mind around how I could deserve such an honor. There are so many other deserving people. I know the work I do is hard and isn't for everyone. I'm very grateful for the opportunity to share about our room and students, and bring light to how much joy can come from working with students who learn differently than their peers. It's truly an honor to work for Mt. Vernon."
