The Year 2023 Bella piagentini

Abstract

The Year 2123 explores the idea of futurism to speculate various ideas as to what the future will look. It focuses on several potential kinds of futures, and then explores those futures further. It is supposed to focus on a more hopeful vision of the future, and make viewers look forward to the future and use as much creativity as possible when imagining what it will look like.

Deliverables

  • Large poster prints for exhibit
  • Postcard set
  • Motion piece
  • Instagram page
  • Interactive time capsule at senior show

Moodboard + Inspo

As I started to work on image making, I was quickly finding myself overwhelmed with some aspects of the project, specifically the sections of the project that weren't fashion. From the poll results, I got a lot of different ideas of various kinds of futures, like one where people live underwater or in space, or a dystopian one verses a utopian one. With my current direction, I would have to pick one and focus on it, and I would much rather be able to explore different kinds of futures. I started to focus more on landscapes and creating abstract images from there.

I started by coming up with various ideas as to what the future could turn out to be and made a list: ice age, desert, tech failure/return to dark ages, metaverse, underwater, apocalyptic, space age/colonies, utopia, and dystopia. I used these ideas to inspire imagery for each.

Posters

At first I started using photo collage for the fashion section, but I thought it didn't look realistic enough with real people as models. After looking on Pinterest, I found some abstract illustration of people and thought it would be a great idea instead of photo editing. I was also inspired by fashion illustration for the style. I want it to be sharp and abstract with textures and gradients on flat colors. With the various themes, I started to come up with fashion designs for the people that would live in each.

Final Posters

Custom Font

I wanted to create my own futuristic font for this project, and I wanted it to have varying widths as well as juxtapositions between curved forms and sharp edges. I wanted each letter of the font to fit into a square to add to it's high-tech vibe.

Final Font!

I collected some anonymous responses from various subreddits on topics about the future to use in the foldouts,

Postcards

After my midterm crit and meeting with my alumni mentor Madison Phillips, I wanted to redesign the foldouts, as the part with text is super boring. I ended up moving to making postcards instead, printed on the risograph printer. On the back will be a QR code to my project's Instagram account. Below are the black and white files that will later be printed in yellow, blue, and pink ink on colored paper.

I did some tests on the risograph, which turned out really cool!

I then turned both the posters and the postcards into a square format for the IG. I added the colors of the project into the postcards with gradients that would match each of the pieces. I still have to figure out what order/layout it will be, though.

Senior Show

For the senior show, I wanted to show the 9 posters along with the motion graphics. I also wanted to feature the logo with my font as a title alongside the graphics. I also wanted to have my risograph postcards available for people to take during and after the show. My initial idea was to back the prints on wood, and then have three of them pop off the wall using a block of wood each, but I ended up having to use foam core to back the prints instead. I then had to come up with a different idea to mount the boards that popped out, as my idea with the wood wouldn't translate to foam core. I ended up using a plank of wood to suspend the three prints from the ceiling, having them hang in place using fishing line.
