Week 3 - term 1b

This week has been packed with exciting opportunities for the class to learn new skills, showcase their talents and celebrate our diverse community.

The week began with a financial literacy workshop delivered by RedStart. Supported by a team of enthusiastic volunteers, the children explored key life skills such as budgeting, making sensible financial decisions and preparing for job interviews. They also learned about borrowing and reflected on how money can influence emotions both positively and negatively. It was a fantastic session that gave the children valuable insights into managing finances responsibly.

Some of our budding actors attended their regular drama club at the Theatre Royal on Monday afternoon, where they worked on performance skills and confidence. Meanwhile, on Tuesday evening, a group of keen scientists took part in the Science Club at the Centre for Life, delving into hands-on experiments and discoveries.

On Wednesday, the class worked with Mrs Bewick in Geography to map out where each of us was born or grew up. It was fascinating to discover that our class represents a rich tapestry of cultures, with children hailing from places as far afield as Afghanistan, Kurdistan and India. Using atlases, the children located their home countries and discussed the reasons why people migrate, identifying push factors (like war or lack of resources) and pull factors (like safety or better opportunities). This activity will serve as a foundation for exploring the diversity of our local community.

On Thursday, we were thrilled to welcome Anna Foster from BBC Radio Newcastle, who interviewed several class members about their contributions to the Live Theatre’s winter show, Blitzen on Tyne. Dom, Kesia and Faith shared how they helped write the script, create characters and develop the setting. Anna was impressed not only by their involvement in the production but also by the fantastic work happening in our classroom. She even joined us to hear our rendition of Stottie Cake!

Friday was the grand finale of our collaboration with Becky and her team at the Live Theatre. For the past three half terms, the class has worked alongside students from two other schools to bring ideas for Blitzen on Tyne to life. They’ve contributed to the script, characters, songs and even costume designs. During this final session, the class visited the theatre to watch actors rehearse several scenes from the show. The children provided thoughtful feedback to the actors and director, showcasing their understanding of storytelling and performance. The session ended with the class recording a song they had practised, which will be featured in the production – a truly magical moment.

Congratulations to Maddy, who was named this week’s Star of the Week for her outstanding contributions. A big well done as well to Faith, Dom and Kesia for their achievements, earning them a spot in the Golden Book!
