2022 TERM DATES

  • Term 4: 3rd October - 20th December (1:30pm finish)

2023 INFORMATION NIGHT The Information Night for our 2023 Foundation families is set down for 6.30pm tonight in the gymnasium. As well as detailed information for the start of 2023 being shared, class allocations are announced and the transition program for the remainder of 2022 is fine tuned. All students will have two sessions with their 2023 classroom teacher before this year concludes so that the start of our Foundation students school life at Viewbank Primary school is as relatively seamless as possible. Next year’s Foundation team is Amanda Elliott (Team Leader), Ellen Maxwell, Bessie Grant and a very warm welcome to Annabell Dransfield who will commence at our school in 2023. Welcome Annabell!

SCHOOL CAPTAINCY On Monday, we had the privilege of listening to the speeches of more than 30 Grade 5 students who have applied to be School Captains in 2023. After voting by peers, a shortlist of six boys and six girls were today interviewed for the positions by the Grade 5 and 6 teaching team leaders as well as Principal Class members. As always, a difficult decision to make when there is such an abundance of passionate and committed students who would all make excellent leaders and role models for their peers. Our 2023 School Captains will be announced next Monday.

CLASS STRUCTURE FOR 2023 At time of writing, our school numbers for 2023 will remain fairly similar to those of 2022 with 640+ students currently enrolled. This will lead us to having four classes at Grade 3, 4, 5 and 6 as well as Foundation. As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, we will have two Grade 1 classes and three Grade 2 classes with two Grade 1/2 composite classes. The average grade size across the school will be 23.7. Next year, all grades in the school will have a weekly specialist class of 50 minutes duration in Physical Education, Art, Music, STEM and Japanese. We will also be running Literacy Support and Numeracy Support programs, and an English As An Additional Language (EAL) program. We have one more staff member to ‘recruit’ and are still finalising our staffing profile, but we hope to announce this in the next two or three weeks in this newsletter.

WORKING BEE A further reminder about our final working bee for the year which will be held on Saturday, November 19 from 10am until 4pm. We hope to see as many people as possible there on the day with the aim to have our now flourishing vegie patch (Jilinga Gardens) flourishing even more. Lots still to do up there and, as always, plenty of community members to chat to and work with, and catering will enable everyone to have a sausage or two to nibble and a cuppa to sip whilst performing either task!

I hope you have an enjoyable weekend.

Kind regards,

Bill Kersing

Principal

SWPBS UPDATE What a wonderful year we have had implementing School Wide Positive Behaviour Support!

The students have excelled at collecting the Values hole punches by demonstrating the behaviours outlined on our school wide Positive Behaviour Matrix as well as finding many other opportunities to display the school values across each and every school day.

Acknowledging the students with a SWPBS Certificate each time they complete their four values cards has become a popular assembly event and it is so wonderful to see many families attending assemblies to share this celebration with their child. This is also the case with the presentation of our values linked Pupil of the Week awards.

This year the students have collected around 30 000 values points. This achievement has been acknowledged and celebrated by the whole school through small school celebrations, including:

Pyjama Day, Icypole Day, Crazy Hair Day and a Fun Games Session as well as to date, one major whole school celebration – movie and popcorn day. It is very likely that students will receive their second whole school major celebration before the year concludes.

As the end of the year draws near, we will be winding down the SWPBS reward system for the year. The aim will be for every student to finish all their current cards and be presented with a SWPBS certificate by their teacher at the end of the year.

Our staff have also done an amazing job acknowledging all the positive behavoiurs and reinforcing our values as well as reteaching and redirecting when students need reminding of the behaviours we hope to see. Their efforts have also been rewarded with a special lunch.

Every project needs a ‘captain’ and we all owe Ms Tara Dean a huge thank you for coordinating SWPBS with such passion and enthusiasm.

Our school’s success in 2022 has also been acknowledge recently by Vic SWPBS Central. In Victoria, approximately 70 schools are shown to be implementing SWPBS with fidelity and to a high standard. Viewbank is one of 15 schools in the North Eastern Metropolitan Area (NEMA), congratulated for implementing SWPBS to a high standard.

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) Update In the 8th September Viewbank Voice, I shared some NAPLAN data with the promise of communicating updated data once it was available. We now have confirmed school data as well as 2022 Victorian state data. As you can see, the results are fantastic when compared to state data, and we are very proud of how the students went. That said, NAPLAN is only one academic measure. It provides a snapshot of learning within a narrow band of assessment items on a given day. As a school, we keep these results in perspective. We have many opportunities for student growth through programs that provide broadness and depth to the Viewbank Primary School learning experience. Not all of these can be measured through a test with 40 questions.

As a brief explanation of the box graphs, 50% of our students had a standardised score above the dark orange line in the orange box and 50% were below. For the green box, 50% of the state were above the dark green line in the box and 50% were below. The standardised scores in the tables are Victorian (State) and school averages.

Year 3 2022 results

Year 5 2022 results

For those of you with children in Years 2 and 4, the 2023 NAPLAN assessments will be conducted online again. These will occur between the 15th and 27th March. You can find the indicative NAPLAN dates from now until 2027 at this web address: https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/key-dates

This info graphic shows when the tests will occur or be scheduled in 2023.

Have a great week!

Patrick

2023 PARENT PAYMENTS Viewbank Primary School is looking forward to another great year of teaching and learning and would like to advise you of Viewbank Primary School’s Parent Payment Arrangements for 2023.

We continue to value and thank you for your contributions in supporting our school’s programs and resources. These contributions assist us to broaden the educational experience for our students.

All classroom supplies will be provided directly to the classrooms in bulk. Teachers (including specialist teachers) will distribute stationery and other supplies to the students as required.

Payments can only be made on Compass from Monday the 9th of January 2023.

Further detailed information about Parent Payments can be found on your Compass newsfeed.

LATE ARRIVALS Please ensure children who arrive late go straight to the office to be marked as present. If the child does not come to the office for a late pass a text message will be sent to the parent/carer notifying that the child is absent. Late arrivals can only be time stamped at the office. When Parents/carers record the late arrival in Compass it provides us with the explanation but does not mark your child as present. When your child presents at the office, staff will record your child’s actual arrival time which updates the class roll.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK (WWCC) A ‘Working with Children Check’ is just one part of creating and maintaining a child-safe environment. It is a requirement that all parents/careers who wish to volunteer or participate in school activities have a current WWCC. https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/

Remembrance Day - RSL Poppy Appeal - Poppies are now available for purchase from the school office

Remembrance Day is one of the most important days on our commemorative calendar. It's a day when we acknowledge those who died while serving in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Remembrance Day is held on 11 November each year. This is the anniversary of the Armistice that ended fighting with Germany in World War I. People in Australia, and many other countries, observe 1 minute's silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month because that's when the Armistice came into effect. It's a time to honour our service personnel who died in service of Australia.

Viewbank Primary School will be selling RSL Poppy Appeal items this year. Poppies are now available for purchase from the school office. Poppies range from $2 to $10.

Donations can also be made online by clicking here

Next week is our annual Book Fair. The students can purchase books and some stationery items from our supplier, Lamont Books. Our school receives a percentage of the sales that is used to buy resources for the Library. The Fair will be set up in the Library from Monday morning until Friday afternoon.

All students will be given the opportunity to visit the Fair with their grade before Friday. They will complete a Wish List that they will take home. There is no obligation to purchase the books on their Wish List. Parents are welcome to visit the Fair 8.30-9.00 or 3.30-4.00 Monday – Friday.

Payments can be made via the Lamont Book portal https://payments.lamontauthors.com.au/ (Mondy to Thursday) or with credit cards or cash onsite in the Library (Monday to Friday). No payment can be received after this time as the Fair books will no longer be onsite.

During the Book Fair we will be running a raffle, with several book prizes for each year level. The tickets are 20c ea or 6 for $1. A ticket seller will come to each classroom during lunch eating time everyday next week. Tickets can also be purchased during lunchtime opening in the Library. The winners will be drawn on Monday 21st November.
