After 15+ years in business in Atlanta as a working/teaching studio and professional jewelry tool + supply retailer, Dana Ruth opened Modern Metalsmith in Feb of 2022.
When I am not on the retail floor I am underneath it, in the studio, working with my tools and machinery to craft, repair, restore, and recycle jewelry.
The storefront removes the layer of commodity sprinkled throughout today’s over abundance of impersonal, generic buying choices, replacing it with an honest and authentic experience. I also think there is more interest in connected economies, buying small, and purchase transparency. For those who value it, the experience is inimitable, a wonderful exchange of energy, and what makes the world go ‘round.
Something unexpected is the direct insertion into my community, and the visibility within; a new experience. My customers are my community and my community are my customers. It is a privilege to repair their treasures, refresh old heirlooms, recycle bits into new baubles, and be a part of their special and momentous occasions. The store serving as a destination for my friends and neighbors is another sweet treat. The significance of being welcomed, accepted, and supported, especially as a newcomer from away, is a feeling that fills my grateful heart.
My livelihood affords my soul the opportunity to shine and serve; what more could you ask for?
Main’s North End is experiencing growth and revitalization, so while our cozy block is a little sleepy at the moment, I think 497 Main is poised in the perfect spot to launch and grow, especially as the direct improvements to our neighboring spaces come to fruition. I have not found any challenges working in Rockland.
My craft + trade is a natural fit in this special place that was built by, and on, heritage craft. As a matter of fact, metal has been worked on my land for over a hundred years with the 1912 map showing a blacksmith living and working on my tiny parcel of land. It is an honor and privilege to work metal, albeit a little differently, in this time and space.
The future is bright! I look forward to growing our Ethical Engagement Rings segment and our repair/repurpose/recycle services, custom work, ALL THE THINGS!! Engraving services are on my radar for a future offering and e-commerce is coming online! Excited + grateful are not big enough words to describe my feelings about landing in Rockland and for my future in this special place. It is an honor to shine and serve my community and beyond!
