SPORTS STARS

We'd like to say a big well done to all of the children for taking part in their sports days. Everyone tried their best and showed great sportsmanship by supporting others. Thank you to all of the parents, carers and family members who came along to spectate and cheer everyone on.

SUMMER READING

Please click here for a printable version of the following information if you'd like it for your noticeboard or fridge!

Importance of Reading

Reading is a vital, life-long skill which opens up to door to a range of opportunities. Reading, for just 20 minutes each day, significantly improves a child’s vocabulary and therefore academic potential and success. Evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don’t, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures.

Top Tips for Reading to Children

If you cannot see the video above, scan the QR code or click this link for Top Tips on Reading to Children from author Neil Griffiths.

Why not take part in the Ready, Set, Read Summer Reading Challenge?

You can register at your local library or online following the link:

https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/

Set your reading goal and read anything you like. Each time you finish a book, add it to your profile and leave a review. Earn digital rewards like online badges and certificates.

We would love to see your rewards and badges when you return to school in September!

A reminder of resources to support at home:

Reading Eggs

All children in KS1 and identified children in KS2 have a reading eggs log in. Please ask your child's teacher if you need this.

Reading eggs is a multi-award winning online reading programme for children. The interactive and personalised reading journey will build your child's reading skills at their own pace. To access:

  1. Simply go to: https://readingeggs.co.uk/
  2. Enter your child's log in details

To create a parent account, which will allow you to track your child's progress and receive reports, follow these steps:

  1. Go to: https://readingeggs.co.uk/linkschool/
  2. At the 'link to school account' step, enter your child's log in detail
  3. Click on 'start' below your child's name and you are ready to begin!

Success for All Phonics

Success for All Phonics gives children a daily phonics and reading lesson throughout EYFS to the end of Year 1. Following the phonics lesson, children will have online access to the book they have read in class (as well as a printed copy) so that they can continue to practise and eventually read the book fluently and automatically, no longer needing to sound the words out. For more information follow: https://fft.org.uk/phonics/

Lightning Squad

Tutoring with the Lightning Squad is a reading tutoring programme where pupils work in small groups with a tutor to improve their reading skills. Not all children will complete the Lightning Squad. If your child has been selected for this, you can help by accessing the books from home using your child's log in and practising reading/spelling the words on the parent progress reports. To access follow: https://tutoring.fft.org.uk/app/student

Nessy

Nessy Reading and Spelling was developed at the Bristol Dyslexia Centre by a team of specialists. At Parkside identified children from Year 3-6 will be provided with a Nessy account. Please encourage your child to access this at home regularly and work through the set targets. The programme begins with systematic synthetic phonics and, as literacy skills develop, students advance to instruction in spelling, morphology, vocabulary and comprehension.

Please contact school if you have any questions or require any further support with helping your child at home with their reading.

SAFETY BEFORE SCHOOL

We have noticed that a number of pupils are arriving to school too early and we are concerned for their safety. Some children are meeting in the The Vikings car park unsupervised and riding their bikes around the car park.

We would also like to reinforce the importance of wearing a cycle helmet.

ROAD SAFETY

ONLINE APPS

We have sent a letter to all parents and carers of children in Key Stage 2 regarding the use of online apps including TikTok and Snapchat, both of which appear to be popular with a large number of our children in this age group, even though they are recommended for age 13 and above. We wanted to provide parents with more information and highlight the impact these apps are having on pupils in school. Both apps may appear to be harmless, but unfortunately some children are not using them responsibly and have used these apps to create, post and send unkind messages and videos to one another.

Please click the button below for a reminder of this letter.

FLOAT TO LIVE

Would you know what to do if you (or someone you love) got into difficulty in the water?

This summer, remember to Float to Live:

  • Tilt your head back with your ears underwater.
  • Relax and try to breathe normally.
  • Move your hands to help you stay afloat.
  • It’s OK if your legs sink, everyone floats differently.
  • Spread your arms and legs to improve stability.

See how to float in the RNLI's new video by clicking the button below - and, most importantly, put it into practice. Floating is different for everyone, and learning how to do it could save your life.

DJ & MAKE BEATS

Come to Junction to take part in a FREE day full of fun, where you’ll dive into the world of music production and explore the art of mixing beats and creating melodies.

In the morning, we will have the decks ready for you to spin the platters, play songs and even try out scratching and turntable tricks. We will show you how DJ equipment is set up and what is needed to start your own DJ journey.

In the afternoon we will move to making our own beats (music production) and we will all work together to create electronic music, sounds and grooves using synthesisers, drum machines and lots of different gadgets. You'll get to remix sounds and have a go at playing, jamming, and recording your own choice of styles including House, Hip Hop, Drum & Bass and more.

At the end of your learning journey, you will then have a chance to come back and showcase the music you have made and the skills you have learned in front of friends and family for one ultimate party!
