Digital Photography 2 Portfolio Max Kell | Spring 2023

Digital Photography 2 taught me what it's really like to be a photographer. I know that sounds dumb but this year I have learned how to become independent in my photography work and with my projects. The independence and the constant improvement in my work throughout the year is something that has driven me to keep pursuing photography in my college career and maybe even beyond then.

This photo was from our valentines day shoot and it is one of my favorite photos I took this year. The way the whole scene is set up and the dinosaurs doing various things that appear to show them eating the cupcakes is what makes it one of my favorite pictures I took in quarter 1.
This photo was also from our paper shoot and it is one of my favorites because of the bended tripod stand that I used to cast a shadow and give the appearance of kraken arms taking down a boat. I also really like the lighting in this photo that makes everything around the boat blue but the boat is purple.
This picture comes from our toy shoot project and I chose to share this one because it is my favorite photo from this project. The vibrant colors of the car pairs well with the gloomy background and I really like the angle I chose to shoot this picture at because it looks like the camera is even with the ground and the car as if the car is in motion.
Flower Project These are examples from our flower project which was the coolest teacher-led project we did all year. In this project we took pictures of different scenes of paint falling from the top of the vase in to the water. We spent a few days doing this because its a very long process to dump and refill the water after it's used, but it was still very fun.
This is a photo from a smaller, more practice related project we did but I am very happy with this picture that came from it. When I look at this photo it makes me think of a little animal running through the plants looking for a meal, and to me just that perspective is what makes this photo really cool.
These pictures also come form our toy shoot we did in the first half of the semester and I chose to include them because of the simplicity of these photos without the subject, the toy. This tiny little biker dude is what actually makes these photos.
These photos come from our ghost shoot and it is a project we did last year but retried this year. I was much happier with the results of this project compared to last year and think they deserve a spot in my portfolio this time.
Throughout the course there were various projects I did where I needed pictures of plants, so these are my favorite nature shots of the year. All of these pictures are very basic but are very cool to me and shooting nature is definetly something I want to keep doing.
Patrick with his rock. This picture comes from our paper shoot and the concept of it is what made me include this picture in this portfolio. The lighting illuminating a rock behind my paper star figurine while also lighting up his eyes makes this such a cool photo to me.
This photo comes from a unique project we did where we went in to another teachers classroom and took pictures of the class as it went on. I was assigned our schools graphic design class and got this cool photo of everything in action.
This is another photo from our cupcake shoot that I found to be so cool. I love the way the lighting hits on the front of the cupcake and the random mess of lights in the foreground and background makes this very cool.
This is a photo from our toy shoot and the scene this sets is what makes this such a cool picture. When I look at this photo I see a crashed plane that was just in battle with a smoky background to really tie together the war theme of this photo.
This is a photo that doesn't come from a real project but I find to be super cool. As me and Nathaniel ventured through the woods trying to complete a weekly practice I picked up this very calming photo of Nathaniel sitting on a log looking into the creek.
This series of photos comes from our time freeze project and I think this project gave me one of the coolest collections of photos. To see water fly through the air in just a frame is so cool because it's the only way you will ever see water frozen in air.

Personal Favorites

This photo is my favorite photo of the second semester and not much explanation is needed. It comes from our flower project, and I love the way the blue sits on top with the colorful flowers and the green falls down to the stems, matching perfectly with the flowers.
This photo was taken as I was experimenting for my light drawing project. I was still trying to figure out the mechanics of light drawing by doing random things and surprisingly enough this amazing photo came from it that happens to be one of my favorite individual photos from the course.
This is my favorite photo I took in the first half of the semester. It comes from our time freeze photoshoot and the perfect timing on the water splashing up and the lemon still going down makes this such a cool photo to me. Not to mention the almost perfect centering of the vase to the tree behind it. The vibrance and colors from the background and the crystal clear water is what really ties this photo together and makes it one of my favorite photos ever.

Independent Projects

This was my favorite project that I did all year and it was my very last project. I took a bunch of students from our class and took them down to the lightless studio to have them draw their signatures with a flashlight as I took a long exposure photo of them. This is how it turned out and I couldn't be happier with the results.
This project is a redesign of our schools entrance consisting of photoshopped plants that I found around other parts of our school. I really like this particular project because it shows how much opportunity there is for something like this at the entrance of our school that could easily make walking in to school not so depressing.
This was my very first independent project and I had no idea what to do for it to start. My original idea was a time lapse of the sky during a rainstorm, but I ended up scrapping it and getting lucky by walking outside with my camera to a perfect time lapse of the softball field getting raked.
