Down East Maine

The season is short in Maine, so if it's summer here, you can bet it is summer everywhere.

In the Down East town of Blue Hill a sign on an art gallery door says it will open in June.

The Monday through Saturday hours are listed with the note that the studio will be open on Sundays too, if it's raining.

This part of Maine defines the character of the state for the rest of the country.

When New Englanders think of summer in Maine they think about the coastline, the tourist villages, the fishermen, the lobsters.

It is an old and steady part of the northeast region. It is geographically large. The weather forecasts cover a range of conditions from north to south, east to west, interior to the shore. And that's how the daily forecast is delivered.

"Temperatures in the 50s to 70s north to south. Cloudy with the chance of rain in west. Partial sun at the shore."

Maine is about what works. The people are open to new ideas. They are willing to share their way of life with visitors, if only for the summer. And as the seasons turn, they are happy to have the place to themselves.
