To continue our work in English, we completed the six brick challenge to really think about how to give effective instructions. The children had to create a pattern with their bricks and then describe it to their partner, who couldn’t look! We then made it even harder by having to create different designs.
Following on from this, the class then had a lesson reading different instructions from games and then trying to play the games using these instructions. Some were easy to follow, where as some were very difficult! This helped the children to consider the important features of instructions for a game and what should be included.
To finish off their learning, the class spent their lessons creating their own board game! We created a version of Snakes and Ladders, for example, Stairs and Slides or Boats and Waterfalls. First, they wrote their instructions and then they made the board for their game. You can see them on seesaw!
PSHE: Health and well-being
For PSHE this week, we were thinking about all the things that make us great! Firstly, we thought of ourselves as superhero’s and what our special power would be. For example, super kindness! We then created some steps for reaching a goal of something tricky we wanted to achieve. Breaking these things down into manageable steps can make it a lot easier!
Science: Animals, including humans (nutrition and the body)
Connecting nicely to our PSHE topic this half term, we started our science topic about nutrition and the body. Firstly, we looked back over the Eatwell plate and created our own healthy meals for breakfast, lunch and tea.
Our next activity was thinking about all the calories we use when completing different activities and how we need to fuel our bodies properly to complete these. We had some great discussions as a class about all the things that use calories.
We then discussed how many teaspoons of sugar were in 500ml of different drinks. We then worked it out properly - some of the results were quite shocking!
