College Chronicle ISsue 12, 2022

From the Principal

Term 4 events and activities have commenced with our Year 12 Farewell Assembly in Week 3. Our Year 12 students finished their formal lessons and commenced their first week of exams with the majority finishing at the end of Week 5. For some students, this represents the culmination of thirteen years of study, from Foundation through to Year 12. Others have been here for a shorter period, perhaps joining the school in Year 7 or 8 as they commenced Secondary schooling. The students have built many memories while they have attended SVCC.

Our prayer is that our teaching of the Gospel has the most significant and long lasting impact on the students' lives. We pray that this shapes and moulds their lives for the future. We pray for each student as they transition into the next stage of their lives.

Today we had the privilege of holding Remembrance Day services at both campuses. Our Remembrance Day event is significant in our school calendar. It allows our College community to focus on the sacrifices that have been made in the past. On 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare, and over a hundred years later, we pause to remember the 330,000 Australians who served overseas. Over 100,000 Australian men and women have lost their lives in various conflicts from World War I to date. World War II claimed 56 million lives worldwide.

In the services, students respectfully listened as we shared some events of wars, and then stood in one minute’s silence at 11 am, as we pondered the tragic nature of wars and that so many lives were cut short because of the conflicts. We were very impressed with the students’ participation and response.

Lest we forget.

This special day also reminds us of the sacrifice that Christ made for us in dying on the cross for each of us.

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 3:15

Wearable Art

On Saturday 29 October, the Year 11 and 12 Fashion Design students competed in a Wearable Art competition in Warrnambool, Victoria. Lara, in her showgirl creation won the Youth Award while Chloe in her dress covered in recycled CD shards was runner up. 2021 Graduate, Chelsea, was runner up in the Open Wearable Art category. Congratulations to the students. We are very proud of your participation and amazing creations! Please enjoy these photos of the Year 11 and 12 students' garments taken by Mr Rob Jenkins. These garments and more will be on display in the upcoming Creative Arts Extravaganza on Wednesday 30 November.

Primary Sports Day

Nervous anticipation dominated the lead-up to this year’s Primary House Sports Day, as we’d already postponed once due to the weather, and a soggy early morning resulted in many a chewed nail. But God blessed us with an incredibly sunny day on Friday 28 October and our young athletes were able to revel in glorious physical activity in joyously comfortable conditions.

Highlights for the day included seeing hundreds of parents and carers able to come on-site and enjoy cheering the children on; seeing young people flopping around in “seal crawl” position; and, as always, crowds of people encouraging all of our sprint finalists at the end of the day.

We are especially grateful for Mrs Heffernan and the admin team, who worked hard behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly; to Mr Davidson Senior and Mrs Scott, who kept the sprint track operational; as well as to our teachers, SSOs, and student helpers who assisted in administrating events and leading class groups.

This year’s event was one of the closest contests we’ve seen in a very long time, with Houses switching positions in the standings multiple times throughout the day. The final result saw Flynn sneak into first place with a very narrow, but well-earned victory.

Preparing for the Creative Arts Extravaganza 2022!

The Primary students at both campuses have been busily preparing for the Creative Arts Extravaganza by completing their artworks in Visual Art lessons. We look forward to seeing their artworks as part of the Primary Art display at the Creative Arts Extravaganza on Wednesday 30 November.

Performing Arts

In preparation for the Creative Arts Extravaganza, the Primary students have been practicing their music, dance and performance skills. Recently in their lessons at Morphett Vale, the Year 7 students participated in a songwriting workshop with old scholar, Daniel Townsend. The Year 6 students have been learning to play the ukulele.
